Finding Website Maintenance Services

November 28th, 2009 Anthony. C. Herman No comments

It seems like getting the website updated is hard work. The in-house Webmaster does not seem to want to do them quickly or else it takes way too long to get one, simple change completed. The work is not difficult, so you wonder why this is such a problem. There are some reasons why this happens. We will discuss them and offer a good solution.

People that have to do web site updates at your company could possibly see that work as “grunt” work and they may think it is boring. They may also have other things that need to be done if maintaining the organization web site is not their main job. This kind of task is not what they normally may do and they, of course, do not like it when things go wrong. Web maintenance and updates come with a set of problems and things that could go wrong.

You should be aware of some pitfalls when performing any kind of updates to your website:

1. Make sure you take a backup of what you are changing in case there are problems. This can sometimes include grabbing a full database dump if the website runs on a database.

2. Do the updates and check that they look right in the different web browsers that are out there like Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

3. Also check the update on different computer operating systems like Windows Vista, XP and Mac OS.

If there happen to be issues, then it will take that person more time and resources to see them, fix them and then test things again.

Benefitsof Hiring Some Help

Having website maintenance work completed in house can be more more expensive than hiring a third party company to do the work.

Once in while, there will be an issue and the work will not be done the right way. If that happens, you will end up paying your person to do the work again and make it right. Instead, when you outsource the work, the company you hired needs to fix it and there is no additional cost.

Giving the work to someone that is not an expert at doing website maintenance work can take longer. They may not be familiar with how to do the update and all the things that need to be checked over and done. An expert will more easily be able to go into the website, make the update, do testing and then be done. They do this work all the time and know exactly what to do.

Who Should You Hire to do Website Maintenance?

The best kind of company to hire to do this work is a website design company that has full time employees. They have employees that they need to keep busy. When there is down time, they lose money. They are experts and will do the right job for you, on time.

Speed Up Your Website By Decreasing The Server Load

November 25th, 2009 Loren Allen No comments

If you have worked hard to establish your website and have it running exactly as you want, then you will be well on your way to attracting lots of visitors. Now you can sit back and relax and watch those visitor numbers sky rocket – or can you? As more and more visitors come to your site and make more demands on your server, do you know how it will cope with the extra server load? Large pictures, movies, tunes, downloads, they all make the computer make more and more server requests. Your website could slow right down! We will show you how to reduce this demanding load and speed your website up.

One great tool for you to learn how to use is YSlow. This tool will allow you to be able to monitor how your website is working and the different things that are considered. Overall the down loadable time is able to be improved if you are able to understand this software and how to make improvements.

Another good tip to reduce server load is to actually ask it to do less! Yes, that is right. If you feel that your website is slow and is deterring visitors from staying around, then speed it up by having smaller images and fewer things like flash movies and animated gifs. All these things can take time to download. The images need not be actually smaller on your page, but you can make them take up less space by compressing them so they will load faster. Better still, host them somewhere else. Join a free image hosting website and your server will only make one call to that website, rather than a thousand calls to itself to load up your images.

A good way to help your site load faster is to have your large scripts executing at the end of your page download. What this means is that if you have some Java scripts, or other scripts which run a fancy gizmo on your site, then encode your HTML so that the bulk of your page loads up. This way your visitor definitely has some interesting things to look at. Then have your scripts loading. Otherwise, everything will stop for you scripts to load and there may just be a large blank screen while this is happening.

Can you divide your data in some way? Have some of it on one server and some on another? This way your page will load a lot of things simultaneously as both servers send things to it. Another way is to not try to have too much on your front page. If you have interesting links, then this will also speed up your page transfer.

It is also a good idea to use CSS sprites in order to be able to find different data and to be able to monitor the memory and speed of your computer as well as much memory is being used by the website.

How to Choose Your Ecommerce Hosting

November 7th, 2009 Loren Allen No comments

Ecommerce hosting means the ability of the web host to allow you to trade in your merchandise or services that you have on offer from your website. In the simplest of terms it means the ability for you to showcase your merchandise on your site, and once they have been selected by the buyer then they can go on to the checkout page. Before this the selected products will be placed in a shopping cart. Thus, you can provide the highest amount of security for your customer so that they are not hesitant to provide the required data online in order for the transaction to go through.

The encryption and firewall gateways provided will reassure the customer about the security arrangements, and hence they will not hesitate to use their credit cards. A perfect Ecommerce hosting will make certain that the customers get a holistic shopping experience right from the time they log in to the time that they buy something from you.

This helps increase the confidence in the customers to be able to pay using their credit cars. With the Internet being a place where a lot of fraud occurs on a regular basis, building the confidence of your customers through showing that you are a secured website is compulsory. Ecommerce hosting ensures that this is possible and is an attractive way to advertise your products as well.

Although this is how Ecommerce hosting provides the solutions right from the beginning to the end of a customer’s online shopping experience. The way the Ecommerce hosting is arranged will enable more ways than one for the merchants as they will have several options to choose from.

You want to make sure that your customer faces a hassle free time when it comes to selecting products to buy and paying for them in the end. If your website at that time does not run efficiently and effectively it will create enough doubt in their mind to not trust your website ever again feeling that it is not secure. It is important with Ecommerce hosting that the customer can choose the products he or she wants. They should be able to select and the remove items as well if they change their mind. A good idea is to have a mini cart on the right side of your page that regularly updates the total number of items placed in the basket with the total cost as well. You can either go for supplied Ecommerce hosting where you will have to design and arrange everything yourself or you can simply go for hosted Ecommerce which means that the company will arrange and do everything for you.

It is recommended that you go for hosted Ecommerce as it is more practical. If anything that you do yourself goes wrong then you will be held liable and you will have to deal with it yourself. Seeing that the responsibility is transferred to a third party will allow you to focus on other aspects of your business. If anything was to go wrong it would not be your hassle to worry about.

How to Make Web Hosting Work For Your Website

October 12th, 2009 Brad Morgan No comments

One of the great things about this technological age is that anyone can make a website. You have finally created the perfect site and are ready to launch it. You know how you want it to look and have the name all selected for your site. How, then, do you go about getting your website off of your computer and onto the internet where it can be viewed by millions?

Web hosting is a vital tool in the internet world. Web hosting, in its simplest form, is when you hire a company or business who has a server and who puts your website onto their server, allowing anyone who has access to the internet to be able to see your website.

If you did not hire a web hosting company, you would have to purchase your own server, which is not only extremely confusing, but amazingly expensive. One server can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and that is when you purchase one of the older models. The price of a top of the line model is enough to make your eyes roll back into your head in shock!

Rather than buying a server, you can choose to hire a company to host your website for you. The problem then turns to choosing the right web hosting company for your needs. If you look you will see that there are hundreds of companies out there who claim to have the best business around. Which one do you select?

To begin with, look at the prices. You will see a wide variety of prices to select from. Remember to avoid choosing a company that you can’t afford. If you spend too much money, you will wind up worse off than you were before you began your web hosting journey.

At the same time, you shouldn’t choose the cheapest one either. Think about it like buying a used car. If you buy one that is really inexpensive, you may have to spend thousands of dollars fixing it up. If you buy one that is a bit more expensive than the really cheap one, you may be able to drive it without having to do repairs.

Finding the perfect web hosting company is much like getting the ideal car. If you choose the least expensive, you’ll wind up getting bad service. If you spend more, you will get a higher quality of service.

This is especially important if you are just starting to learn about web hosting. Getting the cheapest company will leave you with tons of unanswered questions. Hiring a company that has better customer service, however, will allow you to get all of your questions about webhosting answered easily. This can be the key between either having a website, or having the dream of a website.

When you begin your search for a web hosting company, look for one that you can afford and also look for one that has amazing customer service. The minute you get those two things together, you’ll discover that all of your worries about web hosting will be taken care of quickly and efficiently.

So Many Hosting Choices – so Little Time

June 29th, 2009 Alex Miller No comments

It was almost 13 years ago whenever I first bought my domain name and decided to bring my business onto the Internet. Most of you that have only been around for a little while on the Internet realize that that is in literal eternity in Internet years. Although things were a little bit different during those days, there were many ways that they were the same.

You are probably aware that it is possible for you to buy a domain name from any one of dozens of different registrars. During the time whenever I bought my first domain, however, I had to pay $35 per year and I did so to a company known as networksolutions. You can now buy a domain name for well under $10 a year, but I did not have that choice at the time. Because I now owned the domain name, I needed a quick course in how to host the domain.

The first type of hosting that I started out on was a shared server and I paid about $20 a month in order to have the service. A shared server is the most common type, as it allows many people to be physically located on the same server but yet still hold their own space that is separate from the others. Shared servers are not as expensive anymore, and you can usually find a good shared host for under five dollars a month.

My business eventually grew and the traffic that I was receiving to my website grew along with it. I needed a more robust server in order to handle the traffic that was coming my way and for this, I decided on a VPS. This stands for virtual Private server, and it is simply a way of saying that you are still sharing a server but that you will have a much larger chunk of the resources that are available. Most of these types of servers are only split among six or eight people.

As I added additional domains over the course of time, I also continued to purchase additional hosting as well. Most of the time, I would buy a shared server for my new domain name and then move it over to a virtual Private server as the domain began to grow and experience additional traffic. There were also times whenever I would move multiple domain names over one to the same virtual Private server, but I always made sure that each domain had its own IP address.

Eventually, my business grew to the point where I could get a dedicated server and host many of my busier websites on it. Having a dedicated server opened me up to even more traffic as I was able to use all of the server resources for my business.

Is it going to take you a little bit of time to understand Web hosting? Of course it is, but the time that you spend understanding hosting and choosing a proper web host is going to enhance your business in a number of different ways. Don’t rush through this decision, as it is going to be a decision that you need to live with for the long term.

Understanding the Basics behind a Hosting Account

June 25th, 2009 Jack Spencer No comments

Designing or owning websites is an exciting type of business but there is some specified knowledge that you are going to need in order to move forward effectively. This is especially true whenever it comes to hosting, and you should understand the various types of hosting and options that are available to you. If you overlook any of these options, your business may suffer as a result.

Although there are almost an endless number of hosting companies that are available online, they really can be broken down into three separate types of hosting that are available. These types are shared hosting, virtual private servers and dedicated servers. Understanding the difference between the two can help you to grow your business slowly and to move up as necessary.

A shared server is by far the most popular and this is the one that you’re probably going to want to have when you’re first starting out. Far more individual websites and business websites are hosted on shared servers than any other type of servers on the Internet. The fact of the matter is, you’re going to be on a physical box which is similar to a dedicated server but you’re going to have to share it with multiple other websites. Nobody will be able to access the personal information on your part of the server but you, even there there may be a thousand other websites on the server.

Most hosting companies are not going to reveal to you how many other websites are existing on any of their physical servers. As a result of all of these websites being put on the same server, you can run into some rather unique problems. For example, if one of the websites is running a script that goes rogue, it might end up slowing down or perhaps even shutting down the entire server for a time. This is an uncommon occurrence if you go with a reliable company, but it does happen from time to time.

Whenever you’re ready to move up to a virtual Private server, you are really only moving up to the same type of account with one small difference. A VPS is still a shared server but instead of sharing your server space with thousands of other webmasters, you are only sharing it with about six. This gives you access to a much larger portion of the server resources. You will usually notice an immediate difference in how quickly and smoothly or websites run once you’re on a VPS.

It takes a little bit of time for your business to grow to the extent where it needs a dedicated server, but there will eventually come a time whenever this is the case. Many people who are not technical minded can find the entire process of moving to a dedicated server difficult, but it does not necessarily need to be that way. A dedicated server is the same thing as any other type of server but you will have access to all of the resources. This can really boost the performance of your websites noticeably.

One of the interesting things about virtual Private servers and dedicated servers is that you can often add different things to them. For example, you can pay for upgraded memory or perhaps a larger disk. This can really help your website to run well.

Before you start thinking about going with a virtual Private server or a dedicated server, however, you should really look at some of the shared servers that are available on the Internet. These are an excellent way for you to get started in hosting your website and to begin to understand the subtleties that take place within the server itself.

Shared Hosting – More Than Meets the Eye

June 18th, 2009 Jack Spencer No comments

If you have been waiting to put your business or personal website on the Internet, there’s no doubt that you’re excited about the prospect of doing so. The one thing that all of us need whenever it is time to bring our website on to the Internet, however, is a hosting provider that will be able to show the site off to the world. Although you have hundreds of different choices as far as hosting is concerned, shared hosting is by far the most popular.

Shared hosting may be a little bit less expensive than other types of hosting services but that does not necessarily mean that you’re going to be without options. As a matter of fact, the price itself is one of the options than most people look for whenever it comes to shared hosting services. Shared hosting does not mean unreliable hosting and as a matter of fact, it is possible for you to have a decent web host for just a few dollars a month.

Another reason why shared hosting is so popular is because it is one of the easiest ways for you to get started working online. Many of the backend features on a shared account are going to be the same as some of the more advanced features that are available on other types of servers. If you’re able to run your domain on a shared server, you will be in a much better position to eventually move up to another server which has additional features.

There are several different things that you should look at whenever you first start out on the Internet with a shared hosting account. Aside from the price, you also have a number of different features that are offered by the shared hosting servers. One of the main features is the control panel that runs your website. Some of the most popular types of control panels are cPanel and Plesk but there are also others which are quite versatile. You are going to want to stick with the same type of control panel, even when you move up to other servers to make things easy for you.

If you are still unsure which hosting company you want to use, one of the best things that you can do for yourself is to look at one of the review websites that is available online. If there is one thing that people enjoy doing, it’s giving their opinions about these various services. It won’t take you very much reading in order to find out if people like the product or if they consider it to be worthless. Making a good decision is important at this stage of the game, so look at the reviews first.

Above all, you simply need to put your best foot forward and get started. Your website is going to do absolutely nothing for you whenever that is sitting on your computer and nobody is able to see it. Look at the various hosting accounts that are available and choose one, it is the only way that you are ever going to learn.
