Website Design What To Do First

January 28th, 2010 Larry Edwards No comments

In the matter of website design what to do first, a person who is contemplating starting a website or some sort of blog and who thinks that he or she might like to take a crack at designing it needs to keep a few things in mind. First of all, anyone interested in designing a website should sit down and come up with a plan or a concept for what it should look like.

This means, of course, that no small amount of research is going to need to be done beforehand. What is meant by research is the fact that a person will need to correctly identify the market or niche that the website is going to be targeted at. Eventually designing a site that gives the viewer or reader the impression that it is about bicycles when it is really about motorcycles is just one example of intelligent website design.

Along with deciding or determining the kind of niche that the website will be targeted at should be a realization that the site must, above all else, be usable and logical to any visitor or reader who happens to land there. This can create a bit of tension between the desire to make the website look space-age or really relevant, graphics wise, and the need to also be functional and easy to maneuver around.

Those who fail to realize this simple requirement (usability) tend to have websites designed that require multiple plug-ins or that end up taking a really long time to load on a user’s computer because they are extremely heavy with graphics that cause images to load very slowly. Studies show that most viewers of a website will quickly move on if they have any sort of issue viewing that site.

This is why it is important to do the research, identify the market or niche, and then — first of all — design the site so that it is extremely usable. Most experts recommend that websites should try to make use of black text on white backgrounds if possible. If a background is desired, designers should also try to use a plain-color background or go with something that is very subtle.

This is why it will be vital to make sure that the text itself is in a printable color, meaning that while white text on a black background looks good, if it doesn’t print in some other color other than white they’re going to be many user complaints or visits to the website will quickly drop off.

In the end, the matters of website design what to do first come down to research and then usability. Conduct your research to make sure that you are coming up with a thoughtful and relevant website and then make that website extremely easy to use when visitors arrive there.

Finding Website Maintenance Services

November 28th, 2009 Anthony. C. Herman No comments

It seems like getting the website updated is hard work. The in-house Webmaster does not seem to want to do them quickly or else it takes way too long to get one, simple change completed. The work is not difficult, so you wonder why this is such a problem. There are some reasons why this happens. We will discuss them and offer a good solution.

People that have to do web site updates at your company could possibly see that work as “grunt” work and they may think it is boring. They may also have other things that need to be done if maintaining the organization web site is not their main job. This kind of task is not what they normally may do and they, of course, do not like it when things go wrong. Web maintenance and updates come with a set of problems and things that could go wrong.

You should be aware of some pitfalls when performing any kind of updates to your website:

1. Make sure you take a backup of what you are changing in case there are problems. This can sometimes include grabbing a full database dump if the website runs on a database.

2. Do the updates and check that they look right in the different web browsers that are out there like Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

3. Also check the update on different computer operating systems like Windows Vista, XP and Mac OS.

If there happen to be issues, then it will take that person more time and resources to see them, fix them and then test things again.

Benefitsof Hiring Some Help

Having website maintenance work completed in house can be more more expensive than hiring a third party company to do the work.

Once in while, there will be an issue and the work will not be done the right way. If that happens, you will end up paying your person to do the work again and make it right. Instead, when you outsource the work, the company you hired needs to fix it and there is no additional cost.

Giving the work to someone that is not an expert at doing website maintenance work can take longer. They may not be familiar with how to do the update and all the things that need to be checked over and done. An expert will more easily be able to go into the website, make the update, do testing and then be done. They do this work all the time and know exactly what to do.

Who Should You Hire to do Website Maintenance?

The best kind of company to hire to do this work is a website design company that has full time employees. They have employees that they need to keep busy. When there is down time, they lose money. They are experts and will do the right job for you, on time.

Increasing Traffic With SEO And Website Design

November 7th, 2009 Bill Lloyds No comments

Selling a product or service to a local customer base often does not provide a business with the needed growth opportunities to thrive. By expanding a customer base a business has the capacity to expand ex potentially. However in order to expand in this manner it is necessary to employ more strategic marketing tools. One of these tools involves the use of SEO and website design.

There are thousands of websites designed on a regular basis which are vying for the market of customers that will help their businesses to thrive. Many of these businesses have some idea of that search engine optimization is. Some businesses may have been approached by companies offer SEO services and thought that it would make little difference in the overall impact of their marketability. However with careful planning and use SEO and website design are intricately linked when used as an effective marketing strategy.

SEO can play a vital role in the ranking of a business or company on the search engine directories. When websites are scanned there are certain key words that cause the entire website to be placed in a higher ranking than other website. These are the words or phrases that are used most often when people search a directory for a product, service, or information.

There are companies that offer website design services which do not have staff who are familiar with the concept or format requirements to incorporate SEO into the design of the site. There are SEO companies that do not have the staff on hand who have the unique skills and talents required to make a website design that is attractive and enticing for a visitor. However, in recent years there have been some companies created that provide both services and have the staff on hand that are trained to provide both SEO and website design.

Companies that select internal employees to create websites often find that the skills and expertise required are not available in a regular business setting. The field of SEO and website design is very specialized and requires a unique skill set that often is not found in an office or business setting. Companies that have a site designed then hire a full-time staff person to maintain the site often see much better results and also find that the long term cost effectiveness makes the initial investment of an outside resource well worth it.

When a specialized SEO and website design company is retained by a business there are many meetings held to create a design that will be effective and attract the target audience for the product or service. The language of the content must be carefully thought out and placed in the body of the website in a manner which will elicit positive responses from visitors to the site.

Many website designers have perfected techniques for creating sites that are user friendly and provide the look that is required to attract a large audience. It is the purpose of SEO to take the site one step further and provide the content within the design that will increase traffic to the site and raise the search engine ranking of the site.

A growing business finds very quickly that a well designed website affords the company many long-term benefits. The customer base is expanded from a local market to a global market, the sales of products and services increases, and the objectives of a business are more easily met. SEO and website design can be costly in the initial stages, however these costs are quickly offset by the increased sales and customer interaction that is attained.

Top Ten Tips for SEO

October 21st, 2009 Jon Brown No comments

1. Ensure you have inserted your chosen keywords into the title tag so that search engines will know what your website is about. The title tags are found near the top of your website between the head tags. By making sure your keyword is inserted in the title you’ll greatly improve the chances of driving targeted traffic to your website

Make sure you make the title read like a headline, to grab the attention of the user, as it’s this that will show up in the results of the search.

2. Try to link pages within your website together with your chosen keyword as the anchor text. The more links you have the better.

3. Ensure the text with the title tag is used in the body of your website. Search engines do not like it when your title doesn’t appear to be related to the body.

It will also help if you put your keywords in a couple of sub-headings too. Make them stand out a bit by highlighting them or use bold wording.

4. Make sure you change the title tags on each of your websites. If search engines scan your website and see that it’s got the same title it may think all the pages are the same and therefore may not index the site.

5. Do not spam the description or keyword meta tag by stuffing meaningless keywords or even spend too much time on this tag. SEO pros all agree that these tags are not as important today as they once were. I just place my headline once within the keywords and description tags.

6. Do not link to link-farms or other search engine unfriendly neighborhoods.

7. Do not use doorway pages. Doorway pages are designed for robots only, not humans. Search engines like to index human friendly pages which contain content which is relevant to the search.

8. Include a Contact Page and Terms of Use page on your website. You can usually get a template by searching on Google. Search engine robots look for these and it makes your site look more professional.

9. For every image on your website make sure that it is described usnig the alt tag. This not only helps website users out but more importantly allows search engines to index your page.

10. Do not use a submission service or submission software. Doing so could get your site penalized or even banned. Submit to the search engines yourself.

Use this website traffic generator to get LOADS of targeted web traffic. It’s the best traffic generator on the net. Using it consistently WILL get you to the top of Google!

Referrers and Backlinks in SEO

October 7th, 2009 Karolinna Maxwell No comments

Do you know what referrer data is? If you care about your search engine optimization (SEO), you should.

When examining your website, it is useful to know that a referrer is the website that is the source of a link, or perhaps several links, to your site. Every link on the referrer’s homepage is called a backlink, which means that you might look up this data and discover more backlinks to your site than referrers. For instance, one referrer site might have five backlinks.

When you’re talking about site visits, a referrer is the site on which someone clicked a link to get to you. So if you see the word referrer on your Google Analytics data, that means that a visitor reached your site directly from the referrer site.

So, there are two definitions. One version is that a referrer site is a site with a link to your site. The second version is that a referrer site is a site with a link that a visitor to your site clicked on.

An SEO (search engine optimization) company will probably want to report the first kind of referrer to its clients: Any site with a backlink should be counted in SEO reporting. This is because no one needs to click on a link in order for that link to have value. In fact, an excellent SEO company should work hard to make sure those referrers exist in adequate numbers.

Referrers and their backlinks help create authority for your website. The search engines interpret links to you as a way of saying that your site is worth reading on the subject matter. This helps your ranking. It’s as if I wrote an article about (for example) paper, and used a footnote to the American Journal of Things Made of Paper. The footnote is giving the American Journal of Things Made of Paper authority, by saying it has value to me on the subject. In this way, backlinks can improve site authority, and help you rise to the top.

People tend to assume that Google provides easy access to referrer data. It doesn’t. Using link:nameofwebsite.com in Google gives you only a small percentage of your total number of backlinks, although Google Webmaster Tools does a better job of this. I prefer to use Yahoo to find this information, and based on Yahoo’s data, I can estimate (or guesstimate) my Google data. In Yahoo, type link:http://www.nameofwebsite.com. From here you can filter the data for the whole site, for homepage only, and exclude or include internal (from you to you) links. SEO companies sometimes spare their clients this effort by including that information in their reporting.

Web Design by You?

August 18th, 2009 Chris Marks No comments

Surfing the Internet is a fun experience in boosting your creativity because there are so many websites with fantastic designs. Checking these sites out could be enough in inspiring you to make your own. If you have the creativity, you can probably start your own website by yourself. However, making a website isn’t a walk in the park and while there are workarounds like the use of a site builder or 3rd party web design kit, you might end up asking yourself if professional web designers take these workarounds.

The answer is no because they have good enough knowledge in HTML and other web development languages which is needed to bring any mockup design to live. Making a website design mockup can be difficult already if you take the screen size compatibilities into the picture. Making the website friendly for all the browsers and optimized enough to load without stressing out the bandwidth can be other hurdles to deal with.

Knowing all that is to keep in mind when designing a website, the question is then whether it should be left to a professional to do or if you are capable of doing it on your own. The professional web designer is the best choice, simply because they start from scratch and build the website starting from there. On top of that there are other advantages of letting a professional web designer create your website.

First of all, you can state everything you want on your website and the professional or company will do their very best in doing just that and possibility even more especially if the company has high quality as their top objective. Web designers have their own creativity and they normally shock with designs that surpass expectations.

Another advantage is that web designers are capable of completing the job quicker than you would be able to. This is because they have experience with creating websites and by hiring someone who knows what they are doing you will be able to spend your valuable time doing other important jobs, such as marketing or adding web content to the site. This way the project will be completed quickly since everyone is doing something they are good at.

Another reason to hire a professional instead of designing the website on your own is that designing requires a lot of thought and catchy ideas to make the site appealing visually and at the same time easy to navigate and stick to the theme intended. Keeping your mind on so many things at once is difficult and best left in the hands of someone with experience. Several websites also consist of many Web 2.0 elements which professionals have the knowledge of and they also have the necessary tools for designing your site.

A bonus to hiring a professional is that after the website is finished, then for a limited amount of time afterwards free maintenance is offered to ensure that the website runs smoothly. It is well spent money which you will easily be recouped by adding ads and in the end you get to enjoy all the benefits of a well designed website.

Choosing a professional web designer to create your website is a good idea and you will be sure of getting quality work in the shortest possible time. Just make sure you hire the right web designer and everything will go great.

5 Steps to Avoid When Hiring a Design Firm

August 10th, 2009 Darren Dunner No comments

During economic hardships the last thing any business owner needs to do is waste money on their website design by paying multiple California web design companies over and again as they fail to build a proper design.

I am going to list the 5 most common mistakes made when making websites and this should serve as a guide to business owners on what to ask for and what to look for when choosing a California web design company. This guide will serve as a tool for any business owner to know exactly who to choose!

Before measuring the value of a design firm the most important questions to ask any design company before checking their work based on the 5 steps are:

1. Are they an actual company? Find out if they are registered as a business or corporation and can be found on the better business bureau website.

2. Do they have a team of designers/developers working for them or are they a one person show? If they do not have a team that is a red flag because no single person can effectively manage a design firm and create professional sites.

3. Do they offer a contract and ask for a deposit up front and final when completed? In the world of construction you don’t have to pay more than 10% to get a job started, however in the world of web design there are no rules so if the company you are choosing is not flexible to accept a partial deposit to start and final payment on completion I would be very concerned if you will ever get your site completed. If they don’t offer a contract that requires a signature that is also great cause for concern.

4. Will you have full intellectual rights to your website and domain? Never ever, ever!!! Go with a company that has the rights to your sites design and domain name. You should own your domain name and register this yourself and when the site is complete have the right to move your site to any hosting of your choice without penalty or fee.

Let’s get into the 5 most common mistakes that web design firms make when making a site and how you can verify this before you ever start. 1. Site Validation:

This is the top of my list of things to watch out for and most commonly over looked. When you are talking to a potential web design firm ask them for a few sites to look at and then let them know you will get back to them after you have done your homework.

Once you have the sites to look at, take them over to “w3c validator”. Just type that term in google and choose the first option. Enter a website in the field that requires it and click “check”. Now check the next one and the next one, etc. If these sites do not pass then you have reason to believe that your site going to fail as well!

What does this mean? It means you are going to end up with a site that is poorly coded and possibly out dated. It may even be a pre – made site that was just changed slightly and given to you as new work.

Every site that is made should validate and should be xhtml / css valid. 2. You are made to rely on the design firm for simple changes to your site

With all the advances in technology and web design there is no reason why your site should not come with a CMS (custom management system) program. This mistake is due to a design firm’s lack of resources and or they just want to keep billing you over and over for minor things.

Does a design firm have a right to make you pay for simple text changes? Yes, but that choice should be yours as the clients to make. A simple text editor program that lets you login online and make changes to only the text portions of your site is a very common program and there are many variations to choose from.

If the design firm does offer this, ask for a test run before you hire them to make sure you like their CMS program. Even if you are a busy person you will find that making changes on your own goes much faster when you do it and at a much less cost. 3. Oops, they forgot to put the most important features on your site! (How to contact you or how to get started). Every site that wants to make money online needs to have a presence of a real person behind the site. Your business online has to convince someone in 5 seconds that you are the company for them. If your phone number is not at the top of the site or a way someone can get in contact with you is not available on the first page of your site then you may lose over 50% of your business online.

Nothing is worse than going to a site where you are not sure if you will be able to get the full service you about to pay for. 4. Your links are not searchable by SE Robots! Unless you plan to have a site that doesn’t require natural traffic results to happen, this can be another huge mistake when developing a site. Your site needs to be searchable by the SE bots of Google, yahoo, msn, etc.

This means your links need to be real text html links that any search engine can follow. If you are having a directory of information created then every single result of that directory should be seen by any SE bots. This requires your design firm to have a really good understanding of SEO practices.

You can do a search on any site in Google by typing in this:

Site:http://www.sitename.com

If you see a site is huge but only a few pages are indexed then you are sure to have the same issue. What is the point of all those pages if they are not found? 5. Sitemap is not made or not maintained What is a sitemap? Well ask the design firm to show you this on the sites they made and ask how these sitemaps are kept up to date.

The most common sitemaps are sitemap.html and sitemap.xml. There are programs now that can be set to auto check for new changes and new pages on a daily, weekly, monthly basis and then this data sent to the search engines so they are up to date as well.

There are many benefits to sitemaps and every site needs one.

Conclusion:

There are many other factors that go into a web site design but these 5 will give you a clear option on who to choose and who to lose. If they know of these 5 steps then they will know the rest!

Build Your Websites The Cheap Way

August 9th, 2009 Ferdinand Emy No comments

Normally, if you want to have professional designers custom build your site, you must be prepared to dish out at least a few hundred dollars. All this can transmute if you know where to find the optimal deals, the optimal designs for the lowest price. Here’s a rough guide:

Initial, you must fathom that its a rip off to get companies to design websites for you. Have you ever found those advertisements in newspaper classified ad sections that offer a 5-page website at $500? These companies are established companies with physical locations, therefore they have to increase the total they charge to pay off a good number of overheads: office rent, designer’s wages, advertising prices and so on.

Therefore, it would be wise to find freelance designers who work from home. These individuals are ofttimes working from home so they don’t have a extreme operation cost like that of a company. On the other hand, they will be able to design images with quality similar to those of designers from large companies, so its a “no-brainer” choice.

All the same, pick freelancers with care. The optimal way to do this would be to go to elance.com. There, you may post the abstract of your project and get thousands of freelancers to bid on your project, so you will surely get the optimal deal. On top of that, you will be able to choose the designers based on their experience, past transactions and ratings, so your value for money is secured.

Another route you can take is to design your website yourself. Think as regards it, if you only require 5 simple pages to present some simple data, why waste hundreds of dollars for it? Just spend a little time to sit down and do it yourself. You’ll be able to design your own sites even if you don’t know a single line of HTML code with the help of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) programs such as Microsoft Frontpage, Macromedia Dreamweaver and so on.

How to Make Money with Websites

July 26th, 2009 Kevin Smithes No comments

Making your own E-commerce site is what it used to be. The competition these days is fierce. So, any scheme or method you can find to increase your income would be very beneficial.

You have to admit that we are all in it for the money. We are not into wasting our time and effort just for the fun of it. We want to see some revenues fast.

You need traffic to your site or you have no business. Like any business, if you have no customers you dont get sales. Traffic represents all the individual visitors that get the chance to see what you have to offer. The more people who see your products the more people there would be to buy them.

Everyone who puts up an E-commerce site expects to make a profit. With good traffic, we at least have a fighting chance. Monetizing your site optimizes your chance of turning a profit.

Traffic Means Money

The best and proven way to make money from your traffic is to use advertising. The Internet inherently generates hundreds of thousands upon hundred of thousands of visitors everyday. Most of them are searching for something in particular. While some are just looking for information there are many that are looking for something that they need.

The Internet is our most reliable source to find even the most obscure product, service or information. It has definitely made the world a smaller place; you can advertise a product from the depths of Asia and still find a buyer from the center of Philadelphia.

Generating traffic is not exactly easy, but if you do it successfully it opens up a world of possibilities. One of the best is making money with your website.

When you have built good traffic you will have a number of potential customers. And, customers mean revenue. Your website visitors can be redirected to advertiser sponsored links that are willing to pay you for a sizeable portion of the traffic that you have generated.

This monitization technique is called pay-per-click. With every click a visitor of your site makes on an advertiser sponsored link you will be paid. The more traffic you generate, the more potential clicks would spell more revenue.

Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are another great way to monetize your website. You just add links or banners to your website, and you gain a percentage of any sales generated by traffic coming from your site.

In a nutshell, you send traffic from your site to another site that offers a product that you do not carry. Affiliate networks track and make records of transactions that were made possible because of the links from your site.

You then are paid a commission, or percentage of the sales made by customers that came from your site. Affiliate programs give you the advantage of monetizing your website without having to carry any inventory.

There are so many ways to make money with a website. All it takes is a bit of effort, and the desire to successfully launch a money making site. One of the best ways is to build your own site, and start experimenting now.
