The Slow Play: Advanced Betting Techniques in Texas Hold’em Poker – Part 1 of 3

November 10th, 2009 Daniel L. Cox No comments

Winning poker comes down to being able to squeeze a profit out of marginal situations. The object is to win every hand you play, not to win every hand played. The best way to do this is to out bet your opponents. Every bet made should have a purpose. Either it is made to induce a weaker hand to fold, or it is made to maximize the winnings on the hand.

Since there are many opportunities to outplay your opponents, you have to know which opponents you can outplay. It is difficult to finesse weak players. The slow play often backfires because one of the loose limpers will hit a hand. The bluff does not work, since these players call with any two cards. The following sections demonstrate many of the advanced aspects of the game and how best to play them.

The Art of the Slow-play

The slow-play is when you intentionally under-bet in order to disguise the strength of your hand and attempt to trap an opponent with a weaker hand. Unlike the bluff, the slow-play is effective against both strong and weak opponents. Bad opponents simply bet their hand, so if they have something or they are simply on a draw, they are going to pay you off.

You should not slow-play when there is a flush or straight draw on the board. You should only do so when your opponent has a poker hand that is not likely to improve enough to beat yours. Suppose the flop is AD-7H-KC and you hold 7D-7C, and you put your opponent on an Ace or King. In this instance, it is usually more profitable to bet the hand aggressively on the turn. This way you can get at least one extra large bet by letting your opponent make the initial raise for you.

The flop is the main round to use the slow-play. On subsequent betting rounds, your opponents give you action for one of two reasons: Either they improved their hand on the next street and their hand is now worth betting, or they think their mediocre hand is good because you did not show strength the previous round.

If you slow-play the turn, you are sacrificing an opportunity to make money on the turn. The only reason to slow-play here is if your read on your opponents is that they will fold with any bet you make. If this is the case, then it may be worth checking to see if you can get a bet from them on the river, since winning a pot with one round of betting in it is better than winning one with no money in the pot.

Some players want to slow-play a monster hand on the turn so they can make the big raise on the river. This is another example of trying to be too complex in betting. Because of their desire to raise on the river, they slow-play the turn and forgo an opportunity to make good money from several opponents. On the river, these plays usually end up isolating a single remaining opponent, who may or may not call a raise.

While another player may be thinking of the big river raise, you should concentrate on building the pot at every opportunity with premium hands. Fancy slow-plays should not be attempted when you have a premium hand. Slow playing premium hands can cost you money from missed betting opportunities or from your opponent hitting a hand on the turn or river.

When Not to Slow-Play

If you should hit quads or a full house, do not over play the hand. If your opponents are playing out of position, they frequently do not bet the turn or river, instead they check or call. If you slow-play the turn, this type of opponent does not start throwing in raises and re-raises on the river. Therefore, just keep betting the turn, despite the improvement. They rarely put you on quads, so try to get some action on the turn. Do not stop playing your style of play and slow-play when you have a great hand. That becomes an easy tell to spot and makes your play predictable.

Remember, the act of betting does not automatically give your hand away. This is especially true if you have been constantly changing gears and mixing up your table image throughout the gaming session. Never overlook the fact that another player with an inferior hand may slow-play the flop with the intent to open up on the turn. Letting them do so allows you to hide the strength of your hand when they do raise or re-raise. As with the bluff, the slow play is not as useful in limit poker as it is in no-limit. With only a small bet needed, most players in the hand are going to stay in the hand for at least one additional bet.

Representing Your Hand

A strong bet can represent a strong hand. This is especially true when betting after the flop. If an Ace or King shows on the flop, you can represent an Ace or King in your hand by betting. Often, it is what you represent that is more important than what you actually have, especially if you have put your opponent on a medium or weak hand.

Online Poker Thoughts

Online poker can be a great way for someone to make money casually. However, for someone wanting to make a living, they need to be serious about their online poker.

Online poker can be a very fun and profitable way to learn. Grasp the advantages the Internet offers you! Online poker can be found all over the net. Here are a couple of great sites to get you started.

Online poker can be a thrilling game. Because it is played against different competitors and not against the house, it`s as well possible for a player to gain victory at it in time.

Online poker can be a stimulating pastime. Since it is played against different competitors and not in opposition to the house, it is also possible for a player to gain victory at it in the long run.

You had to wait how long to get a seat? Personally, my game relies a lot on the style of play at the table combined with my ability to adjust to that style. When I switched to primarily online play, I focused a lot of my efforts on hand selection and eliminating betting patterns.

Online poker is both immensely popular and a great place for beginners to learn the rules of the game. Online poker software will prompt you when it’s your turn to play and present you with all your possible moves.

You have enough reason why the casino game online poker room has overtaken the brick and mortar poker casinos in popularity. Additionally, online poker is also full of fun and excitement. Sure, you can win a lot of money with this type of poker, but if you are not having fun what is the point?

Online poker is still just a substitute for the real thing. In fact, I think online poker can only help to bring more people into the game of poker, as it’s much less intimidating than entering a real cardroom for the first time with no playing experience.

How to Win The Inner Game of Poker

November 19th, 2007 Henri Junttila No comments

by Henri Junttila

The river card peels off, it is harmless, until your opponent flips over his hand. You’ve just lost the huge pot on the river to a runner runner straight. You feel yourself getting warmer and the frustration builds up until you just don’t care about what happens.

The next hour you play horribly and throw away money because you just don’t care. It is all so unfair, how could he win? He was under 1% to win it when the money went in on the flop. Ridiculous!

This is what happens to most poker players out there. It sucks, but it is true. In one way or another you too are throwing away money like this. You can deny it if you want but that is not why you are reading this article, is it?

There are simple steps to eliminate and minimize this kind of behavior. I call this poker tilt or simply tilt.

In simple words, it is when you lose control that bad things happen. It often looks like you have control when you do not.

Here are 5 ways you can start minimizing tilt:

1. Identify Your Fear(s) – What is it that you fear? Why do you get upset when you get bad beat in a poker game? For me it is the fear of losing money. Since I am a professional poker player I want to win money, I need to win money because it is how I make my living! Identifying this and switching from what I don’t want to what I want makes all the difference.

2. Goals – Recently I have begun to visualize what my goal is before each session of poker. My first goal is to have fun while I play. I started poker because it was the most interesting game I had ever come across and I have no intentions of changing that! Is your goal to have fun or is it to be miserable? I’m guessing you want to have fun, right? That makes two of us. Identify what is standing in your way of fun. Maybe you are playing a limit that is too high or maybe you just need to re-arrange your priorities. I don’t know. Ultimately it is up to you to find your own way.

3. Being Aware – Awareness is crucial to any good poker player. You have to observe yourself. Otherwise you just do not know how you can improve. You might get hot and become frustrated after a few bad beats. Once you know this you can stop playing before it starts. There are always signs before the signs, did you know that? If you learn more and more how you work then you can start changing that to more useful ways.

4. Quitting A Game – The best players in the world know exactly what I am talking about. Quitting a game when you start playing bad is something you too have to learn. This will be useful for you even if you are playing for the fun of it. If you start playing bad that means something is affecting you. What is it? The bad beat or something else? Has it affected your amount of fun? If no then keep on playing! If you are an aspiring professional poker player then you have to quit whenever your game is slipping. This is absolutely crucial to your long-term success. If you just take one poker tip out of this article then let it be this one.

5. Pleasure – Having fun while playing is why we play poker, isn’t it? I mean, it doesn’t make sense if someone played because it made them miserable, right? So make sure your priorities and goals are straight. Keeping poker fun will do many things for you. You will learn faster, you will feel better and everyone around you will notice. Good luck!

5 Ways To Conquer Poker Tilt

November 19th, 2007 Henri Junttila No comments

by Henri Junttila

The last card is dealt face up and it gives your opponent the winning hand. He made a runner runner full house beating your flopped straight. That is just crazy you think to yourself. Some heat and anger build up inside of you and you start playing like a reckless maniac, raising and calling off your chips.

For the next few rounds you lose more and more money. All the while you think about that horrible beat you got. He was practically drawing dead and he won, how can it be?

You know why you’re reading this article. This happens to all of us and you are not an exception. I am glad you’re reading this because that makes you one of the few that have the guts to take a hold of this phenomenon. It is not easy to face yourself and improve in this way.

It isn’t hard to minimize poker tilt, it is quite simple actually. The catch is that it takes time and persistence.

In simple words, it is when you lose control that bad things happen. It often looks like you have control when you do not.

Here are 5 ways you can start minimizing tilt:

1. What Are You Afraid Of? – I’ll begin. I am afraid of losing money and not having enough. You see, I am a professional poker player and I make my living off of playing poker and if I lose I can’t live (harshly put). What are you afraid of? Why are you acting like a lunatic when you get bad beat a few times at the poker tables?

2. Identify Your Goal(s) – What is the reason you are playing poker? Most non-professionals get mad because they lose to bad beats. Why do they play poker? I would assume it is to have fun. My #1 goal is to have fun and making money comes second. I started playing poker because I enjoyed it and I intend to keep it that way. What is your goal when you are playing? What is the need to feel like crap while you’re playing? So what if you lose some money. Play the limits where the money doesn’t hurt and have some fun!

3. Observation – When I started observing myself, everything changed. Progress became quicker and everything became clearer. I know many players who have reached a plateau in their game, because they deny their weaknesses. You have to observe yourself and find what it is you are doing wrong. What are you bad at? It is not meant for you to be hard on yourself. It is meant for you to be able to improve. You can also more easily avoid your weaknesses at the poker table if you know what they are.

Good luck!

Do You Know How To Win At Poker?

November 13th, 2007 Henri Junttila No comments

by Henri Junttila

There are some things that make good poker players. Those things are often not what you think. Often you might think that poker players have an inside secret or a holy grail that make them awesome.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Poker is something you have to learn and put time into to become good. Anyone can do it, but it takes time.

For example if you’re good at anything, you know it took time. It takes around 1,000 hours to get proficient at something and many times that to master it.

It can sound un-doable if you try to see all the steps you need to take. But focus on one step at a time. Think about what you can do right now. Buy a book, join a forum or get a coach? Remember to keep it fun and you’ll learn faster and won’t get frustrated. When you become serious you take the fun out of it.

I’ve compiled a small list for you which is very concise and goes through the most important concepts you need to focus on while learning poker. Here it is!

1 – Poker Strategy – It is important but not as important as you think. Poker strategy is of course essential, but it needs a companion, just like a car needs four wheels to function. The same is true for poker, poker strategy cannot stand on its own.

2. Emotional Control – If you do not use discipline in your poker game then you are missing out. This concept will make or break your success as a poker player. You can be the best hand reader in the world but if you play bad when you are running bad then you will never win.

3. Bankroll Management – You have to set proper bankroll management rules. My rules are to have at least 30 buy-ins for each level I play. When I drop below 28 buy-ins for the level I am playing I move down. When my bankroll is back to 32 buy-ins for the higher level I go back up again. For example if you play $400 NL and have a bankroll of $12,000 (30 buy-ins) but drop to $11,119 (below 28) you move down to $200 NL until you have $12,800 (32 buy-ins for 400 NL).

4. Table Selection – If you consistently play with players who are worse than you, then you will make money. It is as simple as that!

That is my simple list. If you’d like more elaborate articles you can visit my website. I hope this helps you improve your poker game. Poker doesn’t have to be hard, you just need proper guidance.

May your pots be monsters and your cards suited!

Are You Missing These Ingredients In Your Poker Game?

November 13th, 2007 Henri Junttila No comments

by Henri Junttila

Good poker players are made, not born. They put in tons of hours analyzing, discussing and playing poker. You might believe that poker is about outplaying the other players and not playing tight aggressive poker, because you’ve seen the crazy people play on T.V! :)

I am here to tell you that this is not so. Poker is like any other hobby you’ve learned. If you’ve learned an instrument you know it takes time to hone your chops.

Time is a huge part of learning anything. As you know! There are no quick fixes when it comes to becoming an expert poker player.

This can sound disheartening, but let me reframe it. How fast does time go when you have fun? Pretty fast, doesn’t it? So who cares if it takes time to get good at poker if you’re having a blast doing it? When you become too serious about anything you will not have a good time. Set a primary goal of having fun, everything else comes second.

Here’s a small list with the most important poker concepts, enjoy!

1 – Poker Strategy – It is important but not as important as you think. Poker strategy is of course essential, but it needs a companion, just like a car needs four wheels to function. The same is true for poker, poker strategy cannot stand on its own.

2. Discipline – If you know everything about strategy, but fail to quit when you play bad or have awareness of you weaknesses then you aren’t going to win in poker. It is that simple. You need to start honing your discipline right from the start!

3. Managing Your Money – You have to manage your poker bankroll so you do not go broke. If you don’t have money you can’t play. You are your own boss. I use the rule of 30 buy-ins for each level I play. If I play $1,000 NL I want $30,000 minimum. And this is because I am a winning poker player since 2004. If you are a novice and learning then you should have a lot more. You should begin at micro-stakes where you can afford to lose a lot without caring. Have fun and learn first.

4. Table Selection – If you consistently play with players who are worse than you, then you will make money. It is as simple as that!

That is my simple list. If you’d like more elaborate articles you can visit my website. I hope this helps you improve your poker game. Poker doesn’t have to be hard, you just need proper guidance.

Have fun!

7 Important Texas Holdem Strategy Lessons

November 3rd, 2007 Henri Junttila No comments

by Henri Junttila

You peek down at your cards and see Ace Jack off suit. You wonder “How will I play it this time?”. You decide to call a raise in the big blind after an early position raiser.

The first three community cards are dealt. The cards turned over in the middle are Ace of spades, Deuce of hearts and the Seven of diamonds. You flopped top pair and the pixies rejoice! The bad news is that when all the cards are dealt you lose to Ace King who had you dominated the whole way. You think you played the hand well and forget about it.

Was it your fault or the cards? I would say that in a situation like this it is most often the players own fault. He made a simple texas holdem strategy mistake. No sweat though, it is through our mistakes that we learn.

Texas holdem strategy is often thought of as hard to learn. But when you have good poker players to discuss things with it becomes a lot easier. If you do not know any good texas holdem poker players then you can go to a place like the 2+2 forums and start discussing!

Here is My List with The 7 Texas Holdem Strategy Secrets :)

1. Starting Hands – I know you’ve heard this by everyone on the planet, but it is crucial that you play good starting hands. Especially in any position that isn’t the button or the cut-off. You have to play very tight out of position. This is especially true out of the blinds. Play tight and you will have a good chance of winning. I promise you that!

2. Plan Ahead – A good texas holdem strategy tip is to plan ahead. Think about how the hand will play out. Will it be easy for you to play or hard? For example a hand like Ace Ten of hearts in the small blind after 2 limpers and a big raise from the button. This hand will most likely be very hard to play after the flop, because if you hit your ace you aren’t sure if you have the best hand and the same goes for a ten high flop. This is why planning ahead is crucial in a game like No-Limit Hold’em

3. Steam Control – If you regularly donate money to players by steaming, then you will have a hard time being a winning player. You will have to learn how you steam. Spot the signs before you start steaming and learn to quit the game. This will save you a lot of money in the long-run.

4. Table Select – It is vital for your success to sit at the best tables. Sit at the Texas Holdem table(s) where you think you have the biggest edge over your opponents. This is a simple yet crucial Texas Holdem strategy tip.

5. Manage Your Bankroll – If you do not understand bankroll management then you will have a hard time succeeding in any poker endeavor. You should have AT LEAST 20 buy-ins for any No-Limit Holdem level you are playing, I prefer 30 or more myself. If you drop down below 15 buy-ins you should move one level downward until you win back your money and have 20 buy-ins for the higher (previous) level. This is where many fail, yet it is an extremely easy texas holdem strategy tip to implement!

6. Use Everything – I know many mediocre poker players who have some kind of block. They refuse to take coaching or discuss hands, because they are afraid to show their weaknesses. Well what the … ? How can you improve if you do not talk about your mistakes? I myself try to embrace my mistakes because they are the things that will make my texas holdem game good! Don’t avoid discussion and coaching, please. If you do then your odds of ever becoming a good poker player go way down.

7. Enjoy Yourself – Remember to enjoy yourself while you play and learn. We humans learn faster when we’re having fun. I don’t want you to ever stop having fun when you’re playing poker, because when that happens then it’s just another hobby that lost its magic. I’ve had that happen to me a couple of times. I played too much or I focused on the money too much and it lead to me not playing poker for 4 months. Now I try to balance poker and fun more and so far so good.
