Learning Speed Reading

February 15th, 2010 Marion Jones No comments

What have you been reading lately? In a gathering, you can soon see who the broad-spectrum readers are, since frequent readers are often quick thinkers and good public speakers too. They quickly win the adulation, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people think of it as one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, being a combination, as it is, of mental agility and physical relaxation well above the level offered by television or the cinema.

The act of reading is primarily a mental activity, as you read with your mind and use your imagination to depict the setting of the detective thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pleasure that the main characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas theorized by the author in that self-help book you are holding.

Learning how to read properly helps you to develop a wide knowledge of words through reading various kinds of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence is trying to convey.

The act of reading makes you more alert and more interested in hitherto unknown words. Some readers even like to employ ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that whenever they find a new word, they attempt to work out what it means in the context. If they cannot do this, they refer to the dictionary.

In the same way, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing you to different subjects. You learn to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other kinds of education, you are learning by actually doing and while you are reading you are automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too – like a free by-product!

Reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not really good enough, you must have a reply to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Try to develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the writer. Always keep your mind open; understand and consider the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the development of one’s own conclusions.

Now let me mention the idea called speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that! – Being able to read, understand and remember all those books and articles. You would surely become well-read in your field far more rapidly than others. Just think how that could help you at work, in school or in university …

Let me share four primary rules for effective reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember that practice makes perfect. 2) Learn the habit of reading the main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate – the principal ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on the specific piece that you are reading.

Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your reality and capability. You have so much to gain in discovering the joys of reading. So, go ahead and get down a book right now.

Best Tattoo Designs For Anybody

December 31st, 2009 Mike Lemburg No comments

You know as well as i do that finding some of the best tattoo designs for your body can seem almost impossible. It takes way to much time to find that perfect design because of how many designs are out there.

There is nothing wrong with looking at free sites, but the problem is you will begin to notice all these sites show you the same exact tattoo’s. It gets to a point where nothing seems to be original anymore. One mistake many people make is settling for these designs because they feel like there is nothing better out there.

If you settle for a tattoo that you don’t think is incredible you will have so much regret. You will have the tattoo for a very long time and because of that you don’t want to ever wake up in the morning thinking “This tattoo is ok”.

If you have started to get frustrated because of the long and annoying search for the best tattoo designs then it is probably time you think about using a tattoo finder tool. This kind of tool is unique from all the free websites and you are almost guaranteed to find a tattoo you like within a few minutes.

This kind of tool shows the work of some of the most popular tattoo artists in the world. The bad news is you will have to pay a small one time fee. Don’t worry though, the cost is usually fairly cheap and you will get a tattoo that nobody has ever seen before.

Before you go out and join any site, I want to give you a warning. There are many websites out there that are a complete waste of money. If you find a Tattoo tool website that charges your for getting the stencil of the individual tattoo you need to stay away from it. Paying money to get the stencil of one tattoo is not worth it.

You are smart enough to know that when getting a tattoo you need to make it very individualized. You don’t want something that everybody else has. One thing I always tell people is if they have seen the tattoo on someone then they shouldn’t get it.

After you have found the tattoo you want, you don’t need to stress out about trying to make it personal. The person you go to get the tattoo should be smart enough to know how to personalize it.

Searching for the Best Tattoo Designs can be a tough thing if you do not know what to do. If you are interested in learning how to find the best tattoo’s then just Click Here

Magellan GPS System-Is Magellan The Best?

December 18th, 2009 Mike Lemburg No comments

One of the most annoying things you can go through in life is being lost while driving and having no idea where to go. About a decade ago, if you got lost you had to pull out a big map and see if you can find your way back home with it. Do you remember how frustrating that could be?

Thankfully, technology got better and we have now developed GPS systems. But which GPS system is the best? Lately we have been receiving that question a lot and one thing has become clear to us is the fact that there is a company that does produce the best GPS systems. After doing plenty of tests, Magellan GPS systems came out on top.

If you don’t know your history about GPS systems, here is a quick review. As of now, there are twenty four GPS satellites going around the globe. These systems use to only be available for military reasons but technology has developed enough to allow us to use them in our every day lives.

Actually, the majority of cars today come with built in GPS systems. This comes in handy if you can afford a car like that. But for the rest of us, money is tight right now so we need to find a GPS system you can take with you wherever you go.

The good thing about Magellan GPS systems is that they have a series of portable systems that you can take with you wherever you go no matter what car you are in. You can’t do that with the ones built into a car.

If you are a person who loves the outdoors, you will enjoy the fact that Magellan has a large selection of hand held systems that you can take with you on a hike. Getting lost in the woods can be a scary thing if you don’t have a GPS system with you. These also come in handy when you want to go shopping in an place you aren’t familiar with. You can easily locate any store by entering it into the GPS system.

Are you interested in purchasing a Magellan GPS System? If so then you have to check out these incredible on choosing one that is perfect for you. Click Here for more information

Electric Screwdrivers

November 26th, 2009 Colin Jones No comments

Have you ever had to cope with a obstinate screw that just would not go into the material as easily as you wanted? How about one that would not come out for you either? This is annoying as well as time wasting. Power screwdrivers are a great resolution for these issues. They are very effective and inexpensive.

In line electric screwdrivers are designed for fundamental household projects. They are not very powerful, but more than adequate to get the task finished. For heavy duty work, consider using a drywall screwdriver. Some models offer various speeds. There are a number of models to choose from. Some are very similar in design to a straightforward screwdriver. Other are shaped like the number seven, with a handle for you to channel the screws in. Others come with a handle that pivots to help you to get into just about any angle you can come across.

Choose a electric screwdriver that fits well in your hand. Some of the handles are coarse and others have a soft, foam grip on them. Hold the electric screwdriver in your hand and see how it feels after a few minutes. If you will be using it for long periods of time then comfort is very important. You don’t want to end up with sore hands or blisters.

Different electric screwdrivers have different amounts of torque electric and speeds. You will want to compare this information before deciding on the electric screwdriver you wish to purchase. Take some time to appraise what each power screwdriver is recommended for. Compare that with the work you are liable to undertake with the electric screwdriver.

It is a good idea to maintain your power screwdriver fully charged. This will give you the best possible results from it. If the battery doesn’t hold a charge for very long, you will to swap the battery. Some people choose to buy a second battery from the start so that they can have one charging and one in the power screwdriver. This is highly recommended if you are going to be using the power screwdriver on a regular basis.

For those of you who aim to use your power screwdriver often, consider buying a power screwdriver kit. It comes with a sturdy carrying case. Inside you will find the power screwdriver and a slit for each accessory. You will normally get many sizes of tips to use. It will also include a power cord. Some of the power screwdriver kits also include an extra battery as well as a charger that plugs into your cigarette lighter. You can get a power screwdriver kit at a much better price than having to buy accessories individually.

Very few accidents actually occur from using a electric screwdriver, but they can. While using a electric screwdriver, remember the driving force behind it. Both of your hands should be away from the part that turns. The turning blade can cut your hand if you aren’t careful. It is a safe idea to use eye protection as well.

Electric screwdrivers will drive through almost everything. It is very important that you make sure there are no power cords or wires behind the spot where you are working. Keep your hair back from your face as well. Leaning forward to establish your progress can result in loose hair getting caught and twisted on the blade.

What is Fishing Equipment

November 20th, 2009 Mike Adams No comments

Fishing equipment is referred to as fishing tackle by fishing aficionados and it usually refers to rods, lines, hooks, sinkers, spears, lures, bait, reels, nets, and et cetera. The fishing gear that is attached at the end of a line is referred to as terminal tackle

The word tackle referring to fishing equipment comes from ‘takel’ which initially meant the rigging of a ship, that is, the equipment consisting of ropes supporting a ship’s masts and sails. Later, the same word was recorded to have a different meaning, that of apparatus for fishing and that meaning has been preserved ever since.

The most basic fishing apparatus consists of a rod, a line, a hook, a lure, a bait and a weight or sinker. The line is a basic string specially made for fishing that is both long, strong and yet thin, so that fish can not see it. There are various things that an angler asks about when buying a fishing line, such as its resistance, stretch, strength et cetera. The line will be chosen based on what kind of fish the angler hopes to catch.

The sinker or weight, also called a plummet, is actually a weight that assists in casting the hook and the bait as far as possible from the shoreline or from the boat that the fisherman is using. They are usually made of lead as their purpose is also to sink and to get the bait closer to the fish in the water as fast as possible. However, lead sinkers have been banned in some parts of the world, especially the really small ones, which are often called ’shot’. If ingested by birds or other fish, the lead, which is known for its high toxicity level, will cause the death of the animal.

Another basic piece of fishing equipment is the hook. This device meant for attaching the bait on the line and for hooking into the fish’s mouth. It is fastened to the line and the angler can choose from a very variety of shapes and sizes.

Last but not least, the fishing equipment is not efficient without bait or lure. A lure is a device tied at the end of the line that looks and moves something like the prey of the fish you are after. Its purpose is to catch the attention of the fish with its colour and vibrations. Artificial flies and sand eels fall into this category. When the fish eats the lure, it gets hooked.

On the other hand, bait is the item physically attached to the hook. Bait is basically of two types: animal or foodstuff: ‘animal’ referring to small fish or other water creatures, insects or crawlers and ‘foodstuff’ referring to human food like grains, such as hemp, bread or whatever else the fisherman believes might attract the type of fish he’s going for.

The Ancient Roots of Barry, South Wales: Part 3.

November 11th, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

Barry Castle was owned by William de Barri in the twelfth century, but it was raized to the ground by Llewellyn Bren in-16. Many believe that the Cavaliers rebuilt and that the Roundheads destroyed it again. Whatever is true, it was never rebuilt again after that.

The Norman interlopers were thoroughly hated by the local people and they had to build large mansions to defend themselves from the not infrequent raids on them by the people of the valleys and the mountains. During the time of the reign of Henry III, there were 12 castles within six miles of Barry; in Glamorgan, there were 30 castles and in South Wales as a whole there were 150 of those symbols of oppression.

Porthkerry and the church lying to its west is said to have taken its name from Ceri, who is said to have founded a port, ie ‘Port Ceri’. People say that Ceri ap Caid, the King of Essyllwg, resided in Porthkerry before the Christian era and that his bard, Corvinor, was the first to have built a ship with sails and a rudder for the race of Cymru. Some believe that Ceri was a nephew or grandson of Caractacus (Caradog) and that he assumed the leadership of the government in South Wales when Caractacus was sent to Rome.

John Wesley preached in the Porthkerry Church and sometimes outside in the churchyard too between 1741 and 1743. Today, there are two very old churches still in use in Barry: St. Cadocs Church in Cadoxton and Merthyr Dyfan Church in Merthyr Dyfan. One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, Cadoxton was the largest village in the Barry area: thus, in’44 the Parliamentary register contained 25 names: 20 from Cadoxton and five from Barry. The one church was dedicated to St. Cadoc, who had been accustomed to spend Lent on Flat Holm and Barry Island. The village (Cadoc’s Town)took its name from the church, which was founded in 800 AD.

Merthyr Dyfan Church was founded in 600 AD and the name means Dyfan The Martyr. There were two saints of this name: one came to Barry to Christianize the inhabitants; the second lived in the 6th. Century and was the son of a Welsh chieftain. His sister was also martyred, giving her name to the town of Merthyr Tydfil.

The Christian faith grew exponentially in the Vale of Glamorgan and in the middle of the 2nd. Century, Llewrwg, Prince of Siluria, became the first king, anywhere in the world of all time, to be baptized into the Christian faith. He sent to Rome for more Chritian teachers and was sent Dyfan and Fagan. The former was martyred near the site of the church and the latter was canonized. St. Fagan’s just outside Cardiff was named after him.

Some Astranomical Facts

November 2nd, 2009 Colin Jones No comments

How many facts are there to be known or learned about all the objects and phenomenon in our entire universe? Just think: there are about 1 x 10 ^22 stars in the universe, that’s 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars; then there are many of those stars that have planets in orbit around them. Then consider the moons that orbit those planets and the comets and asteroids, the galaxies these stars form, the nebulae and black holes and everything else that’s out there. The amount of information and data is really quite mind-boggling. This article definitely will not contain every fact about astronomy, but they are very interesting facts nevertheless.

Shall we start by taking a look at a small aspect of astronomy: which are the brightest stars seen from the Earth? – except the Sun, that is, which is just about 250,000 times nearer than the next closest star. In fact, it is so bright that when the sky is viewed from the Earth, it’s light blinds out all the other stars in the sky during a phenomenon called daytime.

Remember that according to the scale for the magnitudes given, lower numbers are brighter. Our Sun would be about -26.73, while the full moon is -12.6. So, with that in mind, here are the top 5:

#5 is Vega, which means “falling eagle” in Arabic is in Lyra. It’s roughly 25 light years away and has a magnitude of 0.04.

NB: when thinking about this astronomical information, please just bear in mind that the ‘brightest from the Earth’ doesn’t mean ‘largest’ or ‘brightest’. The Sun is not the largest or brightest star in the universe or even the galaxy by any means, but it seems to be so bright to us because we are near to it compared to the other stars.

#4 Rigel Kentaurus is a very bright, bluish-white supergiant star in the constellation of Orion. It is a binary star, with an average apparent magnitude of 0.12. It’s scientific name is Beta Orionis. ‘Rigel Kentaurus’ is Arabic for the ‘foot of the centaur’. It’s about four light years from Earth.

#3 is Arcturus. The translates as ‘guardian of the bear’ from the Greek. This star is about 37 light years away from us. It is situated in the constellation of Bootes, close to The Great Bear. It has a magnitude of 0.00

#2 Canopus. Of the top five, Canopus, the Greek name for the pilot of the ship Argo in the stories about Jason and the Argonauts, is the brightest, but because it is 313 light years from Earth, it’s only second on this list of the five brightest stars seen from Earth. It has a magnitude of -.62.

#1 is Sirius, meaning ’scorching’ in Greek. It’s also called the ‘Dog Star’ because it is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (‘The Big Dog’). It’s only 9 light years from Earth. That’s second closest of these top five. But from Earth it has a magnitude of -1.44. That makes it easily the brightest star as seen in the night sky.

These facts don’t even scratch the surface on the subject of astronomy but it’s something to think about anyway the next time you look up into the sky at night.
