The Ploughman’s Lunch – Complex, cynical censure of British behaviors, ethics and affairs of state, focusing on the exercises of entirely egocentric journalist (Pryce) and others throughout the Falklands battle. Sugar Town – Amusing variety of LA life characterizing a handful of characters whose lives join together – a musician hopeful who’ll do anything to get ahead, an uptight lone woman who allures the wrong men like a magnet, and a band made up of cleaned-up ’80s rock stars, to name a few. Made on a shoestring, although intelligent and well recognized; excellent cast comprises a number of real life musicians. Cast includes Ally Sheedy, Rosanna Arquette, John Taylor, Jade Gordon, Michael Des Barres, Lucinda Jenney, and Martin Kemp. (92 minutes, 1999)

Lunatics and Lovers – Aristocrat Mastroianni has a imaginary spouse; an organ grinder persuades hooker Mori to “impersonate” her. While it is not unintelligent, it’s monotonous. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Mori, Lino Morelli, Flora Carabella, and Adriano Celentano. (93 minutes, 1976)

The Leading Man – British backstage show romance in regards to an American film superstar who seduces a playwright’s depressed wife and his leading-woman mistress. When it might not make up its mind whether it is a comedy tirade or a light thriller, it is still exceptionally funny stuff. Bon Jovi is excellent as the brash, dishonorable Yankee, and Galiena and Newton are fetching as the females trapped in his web. Cast includes Jon Bon Jovi, Anna Galiena, Lambert Wilson, Thandie Newton, Barry Humphries, and David Warner. (100 minutes, 1997)

The Last Time I Saw Archie – Webb’s solitary try at comedy is less ridiculous than some of his more solemn films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had authentic potential, and Mitchum enjoyably underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes, 1961)
