Using the Area Code System to Your Benefit

July 3rd, 2009 Jack Spencer No comments

If you have been getting a phone call and are unaware of where it is coming from, there is a three digit part of the phone number that can be quite telling. This is the first three digits that shows up whenever you are looking at the caller ID, something that is known as the area code.

Whenever the phone company first started to go with the new numerical system many years ago, they split up various areas of the country into a three digit area code. There were 999 of these codes that were available, although they did not use them all up at that particular time. Each area of the country was assigned to one area code, at times multiple area codes.

The population soon overtook the existing area codes so additional area codes were added into the mix. As a result of this, you might find that one particular area of the country has multiple area codes assigned to it but other areas of the country have a single area code that might incorporate an entire city. If there are enough telephones within the area, an area code will be assigned which will allow for future growth as well.

Cellular telephones also added to the number of area codes that were in use and many of these are specifically used for cell phones. Another thing that has added to the number of area codes that are in use are fax lines, especially in use with businesses. That is why it is not always a simple matter of looking up the area code in order to find out who it is that has been calling you.

By looking at the area code, you will get a general idea of where the individual who is calling you is located. It could be a specific region of the country but it may also span several states in some rare cases. Some of the area codes go across an area that is quite large but typically, there are too many cellular telephones and use for this to be the case any longer. That is why the area code gives you more of a specific idea of where they are calling from.

If you would like to nail it down a little bit further, there are searches that are available on the Internet which help you reverse engineer a phone number and find out exactly who it is that has been calling you. If they were calling from a landline, this information is commonly available to the public but cellular telephone information is not always available because of privacy issues.

If you’re unable to find the information that you need on the Internet, you might have to resort to paying somebody a small fee in order to find information for you. None of us enjoy paying for this information but it is one of the only guaranteed ways that we have of finding out who is behind the number.

In forums and blogs about mobile phones it is being mentioned that the G phone applications are being made available more quickly than those of the iPhone. This is because the Android platform is open source. Anyone can create a new application for their Google phone.

Here’s some good news for Google phone enthusiasts. There is now a subscription GPS receiver application. I think it runs about ten dollars a month. Some people will gladly pay that to be able to have their G1 phone replace their hand held GPS unit.

Why Do Mobile Telephones Drop Calls?

October 29th, 2007 Tom Slater No comments

by Tom Slater

Have you ever been talking on a cell phone and right at the most important part of the conversation you hear dead air. Or worst, you hear a click and some static? One of the most annoying things that can happen to you while you are working or driving down the road is to drop a phone call while on your cell phone. You can’t even watch television without hearing a commercial or comedian making mention of dropped phone calls.

It is one of the most aggravating events of modern society. Dropped cell phone calls never seem to happen on a non important phone call. Just wait until you get into the middle of a business call or you are talking to your child’s teacher at school, this is while the conversation is critical and there may not be a way to get back to the other party so easily, that is while our mobile phone decide to drop the call.

Dropped phone calls are nothing new. They have been around since the beginning of mobile telephone history. One of the complexities of the mobile telephone system is that the phone is constantly trying to find a stronger signal or higher quality reception. The cell phone is trying to find a tower that might be closer. So as our mobile phones look for higher signal, usually while we are traveling, the phone will then try to move the phone call to a tower that might be a little closer to the mobile telephone. By moving the phone call to the closer tower the network is trying to provide you with higher quality phone calls.

As you might imagine, cell phone networks have a ton of subscribers. If you have ever driven during rush hour traffic, you can see numerous phone calls happening all at the same time. This is where the problem lies. There are only so many channels for you to talk on. There is a limit to how many phone conversations can happen at the same time in a small geographical area.

As the phone and the cellular phone system proceed to move your phone call, the system will look for a channel for you to talk on and there will not be one available. Your signal has weekend from the previous tower and you are fading, fading, no channels likewise…Oh. You just got dropped the call. What happened? There was no more space on the tower that you were trying to switch to. Most of the time if you wait a few minutes, you can connect back to the network and complete your call. Even though your cell phone may show excellent signal strength, if there are no channels to talk on then you will drop the call.

This is not the only issue that causes dropped phone calls, sometimes you can be in a bad area to begin with. Trees and heavy vegetation will sometimes affect your call quality. One more issue may be the network might be having network problems in the location that you are currently at. One more possibility could be that you have defective equipment. Meaning that your cell phone has some internal damage on the boards causing it to lose reception.

If you are experiencing a lot of dropped calls with your current cellular phone provider you may want to compare switching your signal to a cellular service who has a reputation of good signal in your area. Likewise, get your phone checked out by a certified technician at an authorized service center. This could save you the aggravation of dropping phone calls if the issue can be solved by simply buying some new equipment or having your existing phone fixed.

How to Pick the Best Cellular Phone Company for Your Needs

October 18th, 2007 Tom Slater No comments

by Tom Slater

Cell phones don’t dictate our lifestyle but they sure do enhance it. A cellular phone has become an essential part of our lives in today’s busy day and age. It seems like every where you look there are more choices for phones, rate plans and carriers. By keeping us in touch with our loved ones and business clients, cell phones have made our lives much more mobile.

There are a large amount of cellular phone service providers in the market today, each one having their own unique service plans and calling areas. Service plans are not always the same. Most carriers have their own definition of “Night and Weekend calling hours” and charge different rates for peak minutes. Cellular phone companies offer free night and weekend calling with blocks of minutes for a one or two year service commitment.

“Pay as you go” or prepaid phone service is an easy way for consumers without credit, or not wanting to be tied to a monthly service contract, to get a phone. “Pay as you go” plans do not include monthly fees, contracts or credit checks. A prepaid cell phone buyer is required to buy a cell phone specifically designed for a certain carrier. Typically the phone will only work with that specific carrier.

Most pre-paid phone services are purchased by using a credit card online. If you don’t like this option then you have to purchase a phone card from the carrier, which has a bundle of minutes, or airtime, that are then loaded onto the pre-paid phone. The cards usually start at $20 and go up from there. The pre-paid phone plans usually feature a higher per minute calling rate.

Prepaid plans are extremely popular as they help you keep a tab on how much is being spent on the cell phone. Online shopping tends to offer the best deals and prices on various cell phone plans. You can also purchase pre-paid phones at electronics retailers, cell phone retailers, and even convenience stores.

If you don’t like the per minute pricing of pre-paid calling plans and phones then your best option is to sign a monthly commitment with a cell phone service provider. Cell phone carriers offer great deals on phones and services when you sign a one or two year service agreement. Usually this is when you see phones advertised as free or a very low cost or even rebates that give you money back.

Family plans are also a popular choice in today’s growing market of cell phone users. Family plans allow the unused minutes of one phone on the plan to be used by another phone on the same network. Depending on the carrier, phones that are on family plans can talk to each other for an unlimited length of time without using any of the minutes that are in the monthly plan. This is a great option for parents wanting to get phones for the teenagers or children.

If you are planning on getting a cellular phone on a monthly service contract, choosing the best cell phone carrier or service provider should be your number one priority. Customers who want to have the best options available should also consider their service providers. When shopping, keep in mind that buying a new cell phone is more than just style and look or bells and whistles. Purchasing a cell phone should focus on the phone’s capability to fit into your lifestyle and budget.
