5 Tips For Buying The Right Laptop Computer

January 10th, 2009 katie George No comments

It’s easy to be intimidated by all the laptop models on the market today. There are literally dozens and dozens in every price range.

The key to finding the right one for you is to step back and consider exactly how you plan to use your laptop. When you define what you need before you go shopping, buying the right machine becomes much easier.

Here are 5 basic factors to consider

1. SIZE

In the world of mobile computing, size definitely matters. The size of a laptop affects two key areas: portability and display size.

If you’re always on the go and will be using your computer only in short bursts, a so-called ultralight will save you some shoulder strain.

On the other hand, if you’re going to spend hours in front of your laptop, a larger display may be in order.

Today, some laptop displays exceed 17 inches, rivaling the display size of many desktop systems. The down side is that these monsters can easily weigh three times as much as an ultralight.

2. HARD DRIVE

Speaking of size, what about the size of the hard drive? One way to approach this issue is to ask yourself the following question:

Will this be my primary computer, or will it supplement my desktop system?

If the former, you should look for a bigger hard drive – 60 GB or more.

If the latter, you may be able to make it with a 20-30 GB hard drive.

But even this isn’t absolute.

If, for example, you plan to copy a huge MP3 library from your desktop system to your laptop to make your music library portable, you’d be well advised to err on the side of too big.

3. MEMORY

In determining the right amount of system memory, or RAM, take a look at the ways in which you intend to use your laptop:

If your needs are somewhat mundane – email, spreadsheets, word processing, etc. – 256 MB of RAM should be plenty. This is a common configuration for many laptops, so it means you probably won’t need to spend extra for more RAM.

On the flip side, if you’re an aspiring mobile digital photographer or videographer, you should stuff your laptop with as much RAM as it can hold.

In fact, exactly how much RAM your laptop can hold may in part drive your purchase decision. Applications for editing and manipulating multimedia content are notorious resource hogs.

4. NETWORK CONNECTIONS

Thanks in no small part to the Internet, computing in the 21st century relies heavily on being connected:

Connected to the Internet, connected to a corporate network, connected to a wireless network, connected to a home network, connected to an online service.

Your life will be easier if you buy a laptop that includes built-in means to connect to them all.

5. PRICE

If you’re considering a laptop, you’re probably wondering how much money you’ll need to spend.

A few years ago, you’d be hard-pressed to find one for under $2,000. Today, there are plenty of laptops to be had for under $1,000.

What’s more, most of the major manufacturers offer a variety of financing options.

Laptop prices have come down, to be sure. However, a laptop still represents a fairly major purchase for most people.

If you take the time to search for a laptop that meets your specific needs, you should get many years of use and enjoyment from this important investment.

How To Select The Right Digital Camera For Yourself

January 9th, 2009 katie George No comments

Capturing moments was never so easy before digital cameras came into the photography world. Ever since, there has been a big international market dealing with digital cameras. Japan, South Korea and China have been the main players in manufacturing new digital cameras since its inception. Today, no media house can run without digital cameras. Forget media agencies, in our day-to-day life, we have started considering digital camera as a handbag’s must-keep item. It has truly given a new definition to the world of photography.

Many kinds of digital cameras with different features are hovering around the market today. And you need to decide on your choices and pick up the right one that fits your clicking needs. You must have already heard a lot about the top brands such as Kodak, Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Sony, Panasonic, Polaroid, Olympus, Fujifilm, HP, Samsung, etc. This article discusses features of famous brands and models of digital cameras to help you select the right one for yourself.

To start your selection process, you must consider whether you are looking for small and compact pocket camera, an advanced camera, a high zoom capability camera, or an SLR camera. These can range from USD 100 to USD 2,000. You will need to take your pick based on your budget and requirements.

What are the features that you should compare between brands while selecting a digital camera? The most important feature is its resolution in mega pixel. In simple language, this figure tells you how much you can expand your picture without parting with its quality. The higher the resolution, the better. But this doesn’t mean that you have to go for the highest available model in the market. Usually people print photos that are sized 4×6 or 5×7 inhes. So for these photo sizes, any camera above 4 mega pixels will deliver great results.

Other feature that you should evaluate is zoom-in capability. Optical zoom and digital zoom are different terms. Optical zoom means actual zoom done by the lenses, while digital zoom simply increases the size of the picture display without increasing any details. In simple terms 3x optical zoom means you can get three times closer picture of the image you see with your eyes. For this reason, optical zoom is better.

The third important feature is compatibility with other devices. Find out if the camera you are going to buy is compatible with your computer, printer, memory card, USB drive, etc. Cameras have inbuilt flash memory but the space is limited, so you would have to buy external memory cards, popularly known as Secure Digital Card (SDC) and Multi Media Card (MMC).

The next important feature is the size of the screen that provides digital display of the image instantly. These screens were the major reason that digital cameras replaced conventional cameras so fast. The screen gives you the ability to review the image and delete the ones you do not like. The LCD digital camera screens are up to 3 inches in width.

The other features that make your camera more convenient include automatic light adjustment, automatic flash, red-eye reduction, file format (TIFF, RAW or JPEG), audio and video capability, image stabilizer, manual controls for aperture and exposure, camera speed, weight and size, body type, battery type (lithium of normal), battery life, picture modes for morning light, day light, cloudy day, etc.

The varieties and features of digital cameras are so many that it becomes really difficult for a first-timer to select one. This is worsened by everyday technological advancements. But all the features mentioned above impart a whole new dimension to photography and they make it easier for even an amateur to click great quality pictures.

Benefits And Disadvantages Of Windows Vista 64-bit

January 7th, 2009 katie George No comments

by katie George

In my last few articles about Microsoft Windows Vista and XP in 32-bit and 64-bit version, I analyzed what are the differences between Vista 64-bit and all other Windows operation systems in 32-bit extension. Now I like to write a complete review about Windows Vista 64-bit and its Benefits and Disadvantages.

I was writing about system administration in Windows Vista 64-bit and I thought I should write a review about Windows Vista x64. It is very important for everyone who would like to switch from Windows 32-bit to a Vista 64-bit. It is very confusing because people are talking different about their experiences with Vista and especially Windows Vista 64 bit.

Since Vista 64-bit launched in January 2007, I took advantage of Windows Vista Ultimate in 32-bit version. In November 2007 I was able to buy a new computer with the newest hardware what support 64-bit extension and after that I climbed to the Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

It was very interesting that I could get my Vista 64-bit Ultimate for just $15. Microsoft has published a websites for Windows Vista 64-bit. If you own a Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit then you can order your Vista Ultimate for free. It costs only few dollars for shipping and I tell you, if you have a Vista 32-bit license then you should do that, because Microsoft won’t do that for ever.

Ok I was talking about my Windows Vista 64-bit. Everything is better and faster since I am using Vista 64-bit. Before I get my own Vista 64-bit, I had heard and read that there are 64-bit operation systems and in the future we will have more and more. If you have a 64er AMD Athlon processor family then everything will goes rapidly faster with Vista 64-bit. Even with the reliability, it is much better than Vista 32-bit. Previously, my Vista 32-bit obtained only 6.58 points in the reliability monitoring. Since I use my Vista 64-bit version the reliability has increased to 9.83 and I get less error than ever before.

Also the most 32-bit software and applications run under Vista 64-bit. And right now we are going to get more and more applications in 64 bit version. Adobe is going to publish all its products in 64-bit too. It may come in this year but latest in the next year we will have all Adobe products in 64-bit. Actually all 32-bit Adobe applications like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash Pro, Adobe Dreamweaver and etc. are running under Vista 64-bit without any issues.

But first and foremost is to see that a 64bit operating system like Vista 64-bit is stable and works reliable because of the 64bit architecture. I still can remember I could make many problems with my Windows XP and Vista 32bit after I accidentally clicked on OK in an error or installation message. It is not anymore the same process with Windows Vista 64-bit. You could click on OK accidentally but if that running application could make problems for your Vista 64-bit, then Vista 64-bit blocks and stops it automatically without any problems and crashes.

All these security and reliability come because of the digital signature. Every single hardware and software developer and producer has to send application to get the digital certificate by Microsoft. If your application has that certificate then you can install it and if not you can forget it because Windows Vista 64-bit doesn’t install applications, drivers, and software without digital signature. If you own any exotic hardware you cannot use it any more when you cannot find any 64-bit driver for your exotic hardware.

But I can tell you it is worth it. Almost 32-bit applications are running with Windows Vista 64-bit because of integrated 32-bit emulator in Vista 64bit. It maybe doesn’t bring %100 performance but it will bring you more security and stability.

I have tested Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows Vista 64-bit. It doesn’t bring more performance but Microsoft has fix many issues, bugs and problems. And it is brings more compatibility with hardware and software. If you are a Vista 64-bit user then you should install SP1 after Microsoft publishes the final release in the next few weeks.

In last 15-20 years we have had only operation systems with 32-bit extension. In these years all hardware and software developers have been concentrating on 32-bit systems. That is the reason what Vista 32-bit is more compatible with hardware and software than Vista 64-bit. Because of that reason you may believe that Windows Vista 32-bit is better than Vista 64-bit. Yes I can say you are right but Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit and any other operation system in 64-bit version will be the future. It is better to change sooner than later.

At the end of my article I would say that you cannot make your old car faster with ultimate gas. It may be good for your engine and you will maybe drive your car few more years because the ultimate gas is more reliable but it doesn’t give you any performance. If you are looking for the ultimate performance with Vista 64-bit then you should upgrade your hardware.

Conclusion:

1-Conversion worthwhile only with real 64bit hardware.

2-Benefits of Vista 64-bit: Faster than Vista 32bit, more security, more stable, more reliability

3-Disadvantages of Vista 64-bit: Hardware and Software compatibility.

Tips On How To Use your iPod As A Hard Drive

January 7th, 2009 katie George No comments

by katie George

At some point most people have needed to transfer files from one computer to another. Floppy drives are virtually obsolete. Not all computers have a CD burner and unless you use a re-writable CD you can only use it for files one time. So how can you do it? Ever thought of using your iPod? Few people realize the iPod can be used for much more than listening to songs and watching videos. The device can also be used as a hard drive to store every kind of file you will need. Here are a few tips on how to use your iPod as a hard drive.

First, connect your iPod to your computer. Once the iPod has been connected open the iTunes window. Then open the iPod preferences window. In the iPod preferences window you can select Manually manage songs and playlists or Enable disk use. If you would like to use your iPod for disk storage and you would still like for iTunes to automatically update your iPod library then choose Enable disk use. This will allow your iPod to store files and play music.

Once you have set up your iPod to store files you can drag the files you want to store into the iPod window. When you have finished moving the files click the iPod eject button in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window. The iPod screen will show Ok to disconnect when it is safe to unplug it.

You can also use your iPod as a hard drive without using the iTunes window. First connect your iPod to the computer that has the files you would like to store. Then go to My Computer. You will see the iPod listed as an available drive. Double click the drive and copy the files you want to store into the root folder. Alternatively, you can create a separate folder for storing your files to avoid confusing your files with the files the iPod needs to operate. Do not put anything in the folder labeled iPod_Control because that folder contains music and video files and information required for the iPod to read music and video files correctly.

If you are using your iPod without having iTunes running you will need to manually disconnect the iPod from the system. Open My Computer. Browse to the drive that lists your iPod. Select the drive and drag it to the recycle bin. Once the drive has been deleted, you can safely detach your iPod from the computer. Avoid detaching your iPod from the computer with going through these steps first. Doing so can result in corruption of important files.

The iPod shuffle can also be used for storing files. Using a USB flash drive does this. To configure the iPod shuffle to store files, open the iPod preferences window from within iTunes. In the iPod preferences window use the slider to choose how much of the drive you would like to use for storing files and how much you would like to use for storing songs. You can add files in two ways. The first way is to drag and drop the icon for the file you would like to add onto the iPod folder in the iTunes screen. The second way is to navigate to the iPod drive through My Computer and add file. If you have the file open you can save it to the iPod by going to File, Save As. In the location window click on My Computer and select the iPod drive.

The iPod shuffle must be removed in a similar way to a regular iPod. If you are working through the iTunes window click the iPod eject button in the lower-right corner of the window. When the iPod screen shows Ok to disconnect you can safely remove your iPod. You can also remove the iPod shuffle if you are not working in iTunes by deleting the drive icon from the My Computer folder. As with a regular iPod, be careful not to detach the iPod shuffle from computer without first removing it in one of the two ways described above.

Hassle no more with emailing files to yourself in order to access them from another location. As long as you have your iPod and the USB cord or your iPod shuffle, you can access and store all the files you need.

by katie George

Internet cameras are fast becoming a staple in homes and offices. This little contraption does more than just broadcast your face to your Internet friends. Learn how to maximize your Internet camera so you get your money’s worth.

An Internet camera isn’t limited to online chats. Sure, they may have been invented for that very purpose, but these days, Internet cameras are used for surveillance purposes. And it fits the bill perfectly. It does all the work of a sophisticated surveillance camera without burning your pockets.

Mom’s Choice?

The Internet camera is fast becoming parents’ choice for keeping an eye on the nanny while they are away at work. Parents can never be too careful with strangers caring for their kids, and it is only fitting, what with all the cases of child abuse. Installing Internet cameras will allow you to monitor the nanny’s activities at any time of the day – as long as you have your laptop with you and, of course, Internet connection.

Aside from monitoring nannies, the Internet camera is also useful for keeping an eye on your kids activities while you’re on a business trip halfway across the world. This way you’ll know if your kids’ are staying up late nights doing his homework, or simply wasting away the nights with movies.

Business Must-have

If you have your own business, an Internet camera will be a valuable asset. You can set it up in area of your shop or office that offers a good field view, and you won’t have to worry about employees slacking up or sleeping off their responsibilities.

Employees will always put their best foot forward when you’re around, but things change once they think they’re left unsupervised. Internet cameras will help you weed out people you can’t trust and know which ones you can. Whether you keep your surveillance cameras hidden or exposed will be your prerogative.

Allowing your employees to know that they are being supervised will help prevent misdeeds and violations. But if you’ve observed clandestine activities while you’re away and you want evidence against the guilty party, it would be best to keep your surveillance camera as inconspicuous as possible.

Easy Access, Easy Installation

Aside from providing instant access to surveillance videos from anywhere int the world (as long as you’re connected to the world wide web), Internet cameras are easy to install. Setup is easy. When you find the perfect place for the camera, all you have to do is mount it. There are also wireless Internet cameras that make this simple step even simpler. Internet cameras come with surveillance software that you must install in the receiving computer. Installation is also easy – even grandma can handle it. Once online, all you need is your password and your IP address, and you’re on your way to monitoring your kids, nanny, or employees.

Internet cameras have been around for quite some time now, and it only keeps getting better. Technicians are coming up with better looking, better working cameras. And since there are about a hundred or so different products to choose from, you will have to do a little work so you get an Internet camera that will best serve your needs.

How Do I Download Music to My PSP

December 31st, 2008 katie George No comments

by katie George

How do anyone like I download music to my psp device from the personal computer? All you need simply is a USB cable to connect your psp device to the personal computer. Yes, it’s that simple and here are the main steps, I like to share with everyone, on how do I download music to my psp device.

A. PSP device to personal computer connection

Firstly, use the USB cable to connect your psp device to your personal computer. Then press on the psp “home” button, which is at the lower left of the psp screen. Look for the “settings” selection by using the left-right directional buttons to navigate and then from there, search for the “USB Connection” on the psp device by using the top-down buttons and then press the X button (round bottom marked X) to confirm your selection. You should now be able to see a USB connection on your psp device.

B. Create a download folder

By now, your computer has already detected a new USB device on the hard drive. Click the drive, usually will be your last alphabetical drive, which corresponds to your psp memory card. Create a new folder inside that drive and you can name the folder as “music download” or any other title you want to use.

C. Download Music from your personal computer to psp

You can now start to copy your favorite music files from your personal computer onto the new folder that you have created in your psp device.

NOTE: Please take note that psp’s using the older software runs only on mp3 format. And also the older software runs inside the psp device does not support the WMA & WMV music formats. We will discuss more later.

Once you have completed downloading the music to the new folder, press O on the psp to exit the USB connection mode. Then on your psp device, look for the “memory stick” at the music section by using the up-down arrows for navigation. Then press the X button again to enter your selection. You should be able to find all the music files, which you have downloaded.

Note that you need to upgrade your psp firmware if you really needs or wants to play the WMA and WMV audio files. Newer firmware versions of Sony for example, can play WMA & WMV files directly on your psp. Otherwise, you can also convert the files to mp3 format. There are many ways to do this. An easier way is to use free Windows application Switch. This is easily available in the Internet. First, in the windows media player, rip the music file that you want to convert. Then you need to run the Switch software, create a new folder or output folder and select the output format. In the output format, you will have a choice to select mp3. Once you are done, you now have converted your WMA audio file to an mp3 file.

Now you can enjoy listening to the music that you have downloaded to your psp. Just repeat the easy steps above whenever you have additional music to download onto your psp device.
