The Ancient Roots of Barry, South Wales: Part 3.

November 11th, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

Barry Castle was owned by William de Barri in the twelfth century, but it was raized to the ground by Llewellyn Bren in-16. Many believe that the Cavaliers rebuilt and that the Roundheads destroyed it again. Whatever is true, it was never rebuilt again after that.

The Norman interlopers were thoroughly hated by the local people and they had to build large mansions to defend themselves from the not infrequent raids on them by the people of the valleys and the mountains. During the time of the reign of Henry III, there were 12 castles within six miles of Barry; in Glamorgan, there were 30 castles and in South Wales as a whole there were 150 of those symbols of oppression.

Porthkerry and the church lying to its west is said to have taken its name from Ceri, who is said to have founded a port, ie ‘Port Ceri’. People say that Ceri ap Caid, the King of Essyllwg, resided in Porthkerry before the Christian era and that his bard, Corvinor, was the first to have built a ship with sails and a rudder for the race of Cymru. Some believe that Ceri was a nephew or grandson of Caractacus (Caradog) and that he assumed the leadership of the government in South Wales when Caractacus was sent to Rome.

John Wesley preached in the Porthkerry Church and sometimes outside in the churchyard too between 1741 and 1743. Today, there are two very old churches still in use in Barry: St. Cadocs Church in Cadoxton and Merthyr Dyfan Church in Merthyr Dyfan. One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, Cadoxton was the largest village in the Barry area: thus, in’44 the Parliamentary register contained 25 names: 20 from Cadoxton and five from Barry. The one church was dedicated to St. Cadoc, who had been accustomed to spend Lent on Flat Holm and Barry Island. The village (Cadoc’s Town)took its name from the church, which was founded in 800 AD.

Merthyr Dyfan Church was founded in 600 AD and the name means Dyfan The Martyr. There were two saints of this name: one came to Barry to Christianize the inhabitants; the second lived in the 6th. Century and was the son of a Welsh chieftain. His sister was also martyred, giving her name to the town of Merthyr Tydfil.

The Christian faith grew exponentially in the Vale of Glamorgan and in the middle of the 2nd. Century, Llewrwg, Prince of Siluria, became the first king, anywhere in the world of all time, to be baptized into the Christian faith. He sent to Rome for more Chritian teachers and was sent Dyfan and Fagan. The former was martyred near the site of the church and the latter was canonized. St. Fagan’s just outside Cardiff was named after him.

Basic Golfing Tips for Beginners: 4

October 28th, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

We have all the seen the fantastically long, but very accurate drives of Tiger Woods. When he hits the ball, it sails through the air and lands smack in the middle of the fairway, some 300 yards away.

It is difficult not to let jealousy rise in us as we wonder if we could ever dare to hope to drive like that. Luckily, long drives are not the crux of the game of golf.

So, we get to the ’short game’ because without decent short game skills, all those great long drives are not worth a candle.

We call the ’short game’ those shots that get you onto the green from roughly a hundred feet away from the hole, no matter whether it’s from the fairway, a bunker, the rough or a drop zone. It includes all chips, sand shots and pitches.

This is where you get to use your higher numbered golf clubs, as well as your pitching iron and sand wedge or lob wedge.

Most golf courses have practice areas as well as a driving range. You should spend some time working on hitting the ball onto the green from different distances. Aim for a ten-foot circle in the center of the green at first. Experiment using your wedges, but what works for someone else, might not work for you and your particular swing.

When you can perform this skill fairly consistently, it is about time to start practising how to get out of a sand bunker. Being able to get the ball out of a bunker can really cut your score quite dramatically and it is very frustrating if you can’t do it.

Plant your feet firmly into the sand with your left foot turned toward the hole. Imagine a 4-inch circle around the ball and try to hit the edge of the circle that is furthest away from the ball.

Take lots of sand with your ball and swing through completely. Don’t decelerate at all when or after you hit the ball. It should pop up onto the green and stop. This doesn’t work well though unless the sand is dry, soft and powdery. On hard surfaces, you might need to avoid actually hitting the sand at all.

However, as in every skill in the game of golf, it is only continual practice that will help you to improve your game.

Ideas for Interior Painting

October 23rd, 2009 Michael James No comments

Redecorating or renovating your house is never easy, and it gets much harder and more tedious when you need to paint as well. Slapping on one coat of paint after another can be draining if you’re doing it alone and still have the whole house to consider.

And let’s not even start thinking about those ceilings! However, even though you may have to stick to the same old traditional exterior paint job, it doesn’t have to be the same for the interior – you could always try out some outlandish but pleasing interior painting ideas. If nothing else you’ll be guaranteeing yourself comments from all those who come into your home.

By keeping the exterior painting to the necessary minimum, you can spend more time and more creativity inside. You can let your imagination run wild with all those interior painting ideas you always wanted to implement but never got around to. There’s no time like the present, and really, when are you going to get around to painting your house again?

Don’t get alarmed though, when I’m talking about out of this world interior painting ideas I’m not saying that you should do something that resembles a Picasso painting. I’m talking about something more along the lines of a paint job that will reflect back who you are.

Your interior painting ideas do not need to be anything bolder than a streak of vibrant colour on one wall, surrounded by soothing colours on the other walls. This works very well in any house and the vibrant colour that you pick can be either soothing or primal, depending on what you want to reveal about yourself. You could, of course, always go to extremes and emulsion all the walls a bright vibrant colour or even mix and match different colours on different walls.

If you’re doing this, then you may want to think about the effect you’ll create and whether you can actually live with the colour scheme for very long. Crazy and inspired interior painting ideas are all very well and good, but you should always take into account whether you’re going to be able to bear the sight of your newly panted walls or not after a month or so. If you are going to have to repaint everything again, it sort of defeats the purpose.

This doesn’t mean that you should restrain your creativity or stifle your interior painting ideas, all it means is that some of the bolder ideas you have, should perhaps be the subject of a small test-run somewhere else.

Don’t think of painting your house as a chore. If you really want to, you can always think of yourself as Michelangelo or Da Vinci or any one of those great artists and paint a stunning picture on your walls. The only requirement is that you turn your great interior painting ideas into reality and that you have fun while you’re at it.

Credit Cards Dos and Don’ts

October 18th, 2009 Bob Jones No comments

Just ask yourself: is the credit card working for you or are you working for your credit card? Most people’s response to that question will depend on how they use their “plastic friend” as credit cards are often known. As many people with burned fingers will tell you, they didn’t realize that things had become so bad until too late, because most credit card companies try so hard to make themselves sound like a charity. Well, take it from me, they aren’t.

And this is not a hate campaign against credit cards. They have their uses – in the USA if you want to rent a car, you have got to have a (major) credit card. But, consider this scenario:

You get an offer in the mail that sounds great, perhaps it’s a new TV or fridge. But it costs $2,000. You have a credit card with a $5,000 limit, so you go out and buy the product right away. Often, this is how your repayment schedule will work out. Most credit cards charge a minimum percentage of the total balance (typically 2 percent) per month. Assuming the interest rate is 18 percent and you choose to repay the minimum amount of $40, $30 of that will go towards interest and only $10 will come off the $2,000!

Does it sound worrying? Well, it doesn’t need to be. The moral of the tale is to use the credit card very, very carefully.

Credit Cards Dos and Don’ts

There is a great deal of truth in the saying that credit cards are not a substitute for not having money. Every time you use a credit card this should be the theme song playing in your mind. Moreover, you would do good to remember the following too:

Dos.

1] Always plan for the purchases that you need and those that you just want. You need the essentials, but you just want everything else. The ability to differentiate could assist you plan more sensibly.

2] If you are caught up in financial difficulties, it’s always a good idea to talk to the credit card supplier who might adjust your repayments. If you simply default, that only builds up an unfavourable credit history for you and you could find yourself being denied credit in the future.

3] Unless it is an emergency, staying within your credit limits will help you a great deal. If you must spend over the limit, ensure you are within manageable levels, say within 30 percent.

4] If your letterbox is chock-full of information on credit cards with more favourable offers than you are currently enjoying, you could always approach your issuer for a better deal. They want to keep you as a customer, so they will listen.

Don’ts

1] Do not use your credit card to make household purchases. It’s very expensive in the long run.

2] Do not just pay the minimum amount. You will end up paying exorbitant amounts of interest. The quicker you are able to clear the debt the better.

3] Do not use the credit card to purchase things you can’t afford.

Debt Consolidation Information

October 18th, 2009 Bob Jones No comments

Where can you get debt consolidation information? It’s really not that difficult to come across; and the debt consolidation information is usually available free in some places! If you suffer a bad credit score, then you can get debt consolidation information by reviewing the free do-it-yourself kits at the local libraries. Debtors should go to the public library to find debt self-help books that will show you from beginning to end the steps of paying off or consolidating your debts right up to actually repairing your credit.

Most libraries will let you print out the forms inside the guides you’ll find there. This means that you can just fill in the lines and send the papers to the right sources. By doing this, you will soon be on your way to debt relief. This is definitely one of the easiest sources of debt consolidation knowledge.

Creditors prefer debt information in the form of a letter rather than a phone call, since the letters explain in deeper detail than an ordinary telephone conversation will and it is also hard evidence as well. In addition, letters are also better for you too, since, if you are being taken to court for the debts you owe, you will have written evidence too proving that at least you made an effort to repay your debts. Written information holds up in court and is better in any situation than word of mouth.

So, you ought to keep photocopies of all the letters you send to and all the letters from your creditors. This ought to include recording phone conversations it is worth getting a machine, recording dates, recording time, and definitely recording the name of the person who called you and his/her location. You should provide a brief outline of the conversation and store the files in a safe place. This could all be very useful debt consolidation information.

If you find errors on your statements or anything that seems weird, don’t delay in contacting the creditors immediately. Furthermore, if you own a credit card, and they try to force you to pay for damaged packages, remember that it is illegal in the US for anyone to try to make you pay for damaged goods, if you did not cause the damage yourself.

The Internet can be just as useful font of debt consolidation information, but not everybody has a computer or is competent at using it and one’s finances are such a personal and often embarrassing topic that very many people would be hesitant to ask someone else to help them search the web for debt consolidation information.

Debt consolidation is usually a very drawn out process, but if you seek the right debt consolidation information, you should find a way to relieve your debt bit by bit and you will eventually harvest the benefits of your efforts on the day when you become debt free and again have a good credit status.

Barry, South Wales: Ancient History: Part 1

September 22nd, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

Much of what we know or have supposed about Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan, in which it is situated has been gleaned from the buildings found there, many of which have been badly neglected for too long. There are also legendary stories, such as that of Joseph of Arimathea, who traded tin in Glastonbury, just across the channel and who was one of the first missionaries to this part of the country.

Tradition maintains that the father of Caractacus took his son to Rome and was converted to Christianity. They returned to the Vale of Glamorgan with the missionary Bran the Blessed. We do know that Christianity had become fairly popular by the early 4th. Century and that south Wales sent some bishops to the Council of Rome.

Saint Baruch’s Church on Barry Island is one of the oldest places of historic religious interest in the region, but unfortunately, it too has been allowed to become dilapidated. Barry Island was one of the most important places of monastic interest in south Wales and around. The ancient Viking strongholds of Steep and Flat Holms also housed monks and Saint Illtyd’s Seminary in nearby Llantwit Major, which taught 2,200 disciples, was closely linked to it too.

There was an ancient Roman fort and accompanying naval dockyard on Porthkerry Point, which had obviously jutted out further into the sea than it does now and later a castle was built on their ruins. There have been found many wolf and deer bones between Sully and Barry – enough to show that they had existed there in great numbers. There have also been a large number of findings of arrowheads, flints, needles and coins, proving that people were there to prey on them too.

‘The Island’, as it is known locally, was first named Baruch’s Island after St. Baruch, who was found washed up on one its beaches dead in 700 AD. He had been drowned on his return from Flat Holm, where it was common practice for religious students to spend Lent.

He and Gwelches had been disciples of St. Cadoc at the time. On their return to the island, they realized that they had left their enchiridion (religious manual) behind and St. Cadoc made them go back and get it. They never returned alive. St. Baruchs most famous disciple, St. Illtyd was educated there.

Barry Island has had several names, including Island of the Saints and Insular of Peiros. St. Peiro was the leader of the seminary after St. Illtyd and the mentor of St. Samson. St. Doeninas was also a leader of another abbey near Friars Point on the island.

Hand-held Mosquito Zapper

August 16th, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

The hand held insect zapper is the best way of clearing the space around you of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The hand held insect zapper vaporizes any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantaneously on contact with a nice, loud, electrical ‘zap’!

However, this is not to say that the indoor bug zapper cannot be used outdoors, as long as it is not raining. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the hand held insect zapper dry and definitely do not use it while you are standing in water!

Models do vary greatly, but there are really only two types of indoor insect killer: the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric insect zapper. Both models are equally effective at zapping insects and work on the same methods.

The indoor insect zapper resembles a ‘kids’ tennis racket, but with three sets of ’strings’, which are in fact wires. The innermost grid of wires becomes live at the touch of a button, while the other two networks, one on either side, are only earths.

When an insect is caught between the wires of the electric bug killer, it creates a short, which vaporizes it instantly with a loud crack and a flash. The indoor bug zapper will kill other bugs too, but they tend to burn instead of just disappear.

I have been using the rechargeable kind for five years and am extremely satisfied with the electric bug zapper. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way over the last few years. A fully charged indoor insect killer is powerful enough to last for several hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, when unused, for weeks without any significant discharge.

The rechargeable battery unit will put up with serious use for the best part of a year, although its capability to hold a charge for several weeks gradually diminishes after six or seven months.

The most recent indoor bug zapper I’ve used has a main on/off switch, an LED that shines when it is live (the brightness of this light also indicates the battery’s strength) and a light that comes on when it is plugged in on recharge.

The instructions suggest that the bug zapper should be (re)charged for about sixteen hours. However, I usually put mine on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the electric bug zapper shows a large increase in performance with only a few hours recharging.

The latest version I’ve used also comes with a strong light called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very handy when walking in the garden, but I’m unsure whether it’s supposed to attract the mosquitoes in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re feeling bored or just vindictive, rather like an Anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my electric bug zapper for that too, but the light uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the electric bug zapper is a big asset to any outdoor event. The indoor insect zapper is useful to ‘clean out’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unbeatable for evening mosquitoes and it will clear a lunch table of wasps too.

The French Open Championship

August 12th, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

It is pretty unlikely that you will not know of the French Open tennis championship, because it is a competition which is an annual topic of conversation. In French the name of the competition is ‘Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros’ or ‘Tournoi de Roland Garros’. This tournament, which lasts for roughly a fortnight is held in Paris at the Roland Garros Stadium, from which it got its name.

The French Open is one of the most advertised and broadcast sports events in the entire world of sport and many VIPs attend it. The attendees are fanatics who wait with baited breath on every stroke, especially when there is a close battle between the two teams, doing|trying| their best to win. Even TV viewers actually get a feeling of being there live.

The French Open tennis championship comes in second on the annual round of the Grand Slam tournaments and its history goes back to the year of 1891 when it was elevated to an international competition. In those days, it was called the ‘International Championship of Tennis of France’ or ‘Championat de France International de Tennis’ in French.

Initially, only players that were registered or licensed in France were allowed to participate in this competition, but things took a different turn in 1925, when the French open tennis tournament finally became accessible to foreign players. Until 1912, the ground the players used was made of crushed red brick dust. Actually the crushed brick was formed into a sort of red clay that was spread over the ground, which, until then, would have been a green lawn.

The public’s enthusiasm for the French Open tennis tournament held at the Roland Garros stadium, goes back to a competition fought between the Philadelphia Four (Rene Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon) who won the Davis Cup in 1927. It was the trigger of the desire in the French to defend their cup in future competitions. This new tournament was meant to bring back home the cup and was held at a stadium named after the World War I ace Roland Garros. The name has stuck since then.

The term ‘open’ was has been used since 1968, when the tournament allowed|was open to| both amateurs and professionals alike who wanted to test their skills at tennis. Since then, the French Open tennis tournament has also brought in some novel ideas in prizes.

Apart from the regular winners’ prizes, they also award a ‘Prix Orange’ for the most correct and press-friendly player, a ‘Prix Citron’ for the player with the strongest personality and a ‘Prix Burgeon’ for the one the best new-comer of the tennis year.

Payday Cash Advances

August 4th, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

Everything that has to do with money take time to understand, which means that if you do not regulate how you spend your money, then you will find yourself in a continuous financial jam. This is not meant to frighten you from spending money, it is only said to open your eyes to the reality that money has to be taken seriously, because people are failing to take responsibility for their actions involving mo

The worst thing about debt is that it is insidious. Once it starts, it always seems to grow and then you can’t get out of it. However, you frequently discover that no matter how hard you try, you always end up having to spend even more money. A payday cash advance is the choice that a lot of people prefer.

This is because of the fact that more people are discovering how easy it is to meet all the financial requirements needed for a cash advance loan, which is in fact only a short-term loan. Application is now also made simpler because people can now apply for these cash advances over the Internet instead of having to stand in a queue in a store and wait.

There are many web sites offering cash advance loans, so you have a large selection from which to select one. You have to pick the cash advance website that best suits your requirements. Most cash advance websites have a stipulation on how much money you can borrow at most.

With a payday cash advance, you can pay back the money you have borrowed with your next pay check, which means that you make an agreement with the cash advance agency to borrow money now and then repay it when your next payday arrives.

Furthermore, the interest that you pay back to the company is lower because the loan is so short term. However, if you need an extension on your loan, most companies will require you to pay a fee of $25 for the administration of that loan extension.

Whatever the case, make sure you evaluate your entire situation. Don’t take any rash decisions just because you need money right now. Instead, wait and see if there is any other way out. Don’t rule out help from friends and family, as this can mean the difference between being financially-dependent on cash advances or being able to pay back on easier terms.

How to Get an Impressive Online Presence and a Free Sideline Business.

August 3rd, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

Do you already have a business? I mean a conventional, off-line business. Or are you trying to make some money promoting generic sites with only an affiliate link? Both of these types of business often have something in common ” that is that their online presence is usually awful.

Many business owners and affiliate website promoters just do not seem to understand that a poor website does a lot more harm than good. A business owner who has created a website on Geofreebies or one of the other free webspace providers is essentially doing the same as someone who only promotes an affiliate link on an automatically-generated, replicated affiliate page.

The problem is that it is obvious what these sites are: cheap and nasty; and that reflects on the business and the owner both. The same goes for email addresses. After all, what looks better to you:

http://www.geofreebies.com/memnbersites/Amiable-Dragon.html

amiable-dragon123456@yahoo.com or

http://amiabledragon.com

owen@amiabledragon.com

It is all too obvious which looks more professional; which gives more confidence and which would bring in more customers and so more sales and Im sure that there is no one in the world who would disagree with that.

The next thing to consider is the extension ” ie the letters after the . or the @. .com probably still carries the most prestige, but it no longer has the lead it used to have. .tv, .biz, .info have their places, I’m sure, but they do not really have the same cachet. However, another problem with .com is that it has been around since the Internet began and very many names have already been taken.

I consider that .ws is a very valid alternative to this problem. You could imagine it standing for web site, although it actually stands for Western Samoa! It is a relatively new suffix and many, many name combinations are still available. I am sure you could still get the address you want. Something else you may not know is that when you buy your own domain name, you can create any email address out of it by putting anything instead of the http://www and replacing the DOT with an @ sign. Look at the address above again for an example.

Then you have to choose a host for your domain and administer the site and email addresses. The fees are usually paid annually in advance for the name and monthly for the hosting, quite often both payments go to different companies. However, there is now a very professional company on the market which is offering a website, with a name of your choice and ten variable email addresses and a free website design service and all you pay is $10 a month to one firm for the whole package. There is no contract and you can leave at any time or change the email or website addresses. It is remarkably flexible.

I think that that represents a very good deal for a business website (you can imagine: sales@….; info@….); a family website (everyone can have their own individual, private email address) or an affiliate website (using redirects and multiple email addresses: for PayPal etc.). But that is not all there is to it! You can actively promote that new hosting company or just put a referral link to it on the bottom of your website and make cash, month after month for ever more from referrals on autopilot from your visitors! And if you use the link below, you will get a free weeks trial, but fully operational account and three paying members in your downline, subject to a condition, or your first months $10 paid for you by us.

That cant be bad, can it? You can not lose. Five weeks free trial of your own domain, hosted on your own site, with 10 email address or a free week with three members paying you $3 a month to give your business a flying start!
