1 Second Seo Tip

January 29th, 2010 David Anttony No comments

There are two types of SEO, onsite and offsite. Onsite involves optimizing your website to make it search engine friendly. By changing your local site and adding special SEO components you can attract better results, and sometimes great results from search engines like Google.

You can get very good results with just onsite optimization on its own but the results tend to be unstable and not effective long-term. To get top results you will need to do a lot off offsite optimisation as well.

Top onsite SEO tip: change the page title

Believe it or not the changing the page title is one of the most important onsite optimization techniques you can do. The page title is what appears at the top of a browser on the left hand side. Visitors to your web site will not usually take much notice of your page title because it is not rendered on your page. However, search engines take a lot of notice of the page title.

If you have never seen what a <title?</title? tag looks like within an HTML page then simple open up the page source and take a look at the top of the page. To view the page souce, the easiest way is to right click on the page and select view source.

You will find the page title within the <title?</title? tags usually within the first few lines of the HTML code. This is an instance of an HTML title tag : <title? This is my page title</title?.

Search engines take a lot of notice of the page title because it is like the title of a book, it tells you what the book is about. If the title is clear and succinct it tells search engines exactly what the page is about then you can rank high for some of your preferred keywords.

The trick is not to dilute your page title with supplemental non-keywords. Do not add words like in and the, and other filler words. The closer you can get to the pure keywords the better.

For example, avoid doing this: <title?Earth Worms in the Middle East</title? when your keyword is earth worms. Instead simply use: <title?Earth Worms</title?.

If you have multiple keywords only use 2 or 3 maximum or again the focus is diluted. If you are using multiple keywords then do it like this: <title?Earth worms | Middle East</title? – never use filler words like ‘in’ and ‘the’.

SEO Training Tips – Setting Up A Blog Properly

January 23rd, 2010 David Anttony No comments

WordPress is one of the top Search Engine Optimization enhanced blogs that you can choose to use. It is a world leader. It is uncomplicated and easy to use, looks great and above all is 90% Search Engine Optimisation ready out of the package.

This is part of a series of tip articles just about using WordPress for leveraging on Search Engine Optimisation.

Tip: Make sure the blog is on YOUR site

We are often asked

If you are doing blogging for SEO reasons compared to obtaining traffic purposes, then you can ONLY locate your blog in one place and one place only – On your site!

Do not even think about using a sub-web such as http://www.blog.myhotsite.com. Why would you use a sub web anyhow unless if you want a cool blog URL.

Sub webs are part of your web site but they are unclear from an SEO position. If you want to have the blog content 100% associated with your website then make sure it is off a sub folder and NOT a sub web for example : http://www.myhappysite.com/blog.

Sub webs will not gain you the identical SEO ranking across all search engines because many search engines process sub webs as a distinctly different website.

If your blog is currently on WordPress.com or Blogger.com then consider quickly to relocate it and it’s contents to your physical website. Shifting a WordPress.com hosted site to your own WordPress site hosted by you is uncomplicated – do a database backup and then set up WordPress on your web site and then restore the contents. Moving a Blogger site to a WordPress site is not as easy. If you need to study how to do this then just Google – “moving a blogger blog to wordpress” and you will get some great tips on how to do this.

One big thing to watch out for if you move a large blog to your site (with lots of content), that if you are currently ranking for a number of keywords, then your ranking can be seriously affected after you have added your blog content.

We have experienced client ranking drop after adding a lot of new content in the form of a blog to a clients sites. Adding a blast of new content ‘dilutes’ your current site content if the new content is NOT Search Engine Optimisation optimized for the keywords that you want to rank for. Search Engine Optimize the content before making it live to avoid this dilution process. Taking the time to do this BEFORE you add it to your site will make a big difference to your immediate ranking position.

One Stop Meta Tag Mania

January 8th, 2010 David Anttony No comments

There is only one meta tag that most search engines use – the description tag. It is not ordinarily used for SEO ranking purposes, but it is ordinarily used (including by Google) as the text on the search results listing.

Google by and large uses the description meta tag as the text to present when it displays your website in the search results. We find that it will use this about 70-80% of the time. The rest of the time it will select random text from your home page but commonly it picks up the first 156 characters of text on the page if it does not use the description tag. Make sure your description tags are always 156 characters or less.

So when you use a good description and a search engine uses it then it will help your click through rate. If your description is attractive people will click though more.

All meta tags should be at the start of the page inside the head tags.

Google is a little scallywag when it comes to using or not using the meta description tag. When it does use it you can have full control of what is exposed to potential visitors but it will often vary what it uses at will with sometimes it just plucking a piece of text from your page.

To make sure you have more control over what Google selects as the text in the search results as well as setting the description tag carefully also make sure that the first 156 characters of text on your page says what you would like to see in Google.

If you have a flash site or just use pictures with a little text, you have a problem! We have seen Google pick up the alt text from an image and exhibit this when it didn’t choose to use our description tag. This will tell you to ALWAYS have some text on your page even if it is only 156 carefully chosen characters (including spaces).

SEO Trainer Selection Tips

November 3rd, 2009 David Anttony No comments

SEO is a very differentiated field of net marketing. It’s a combination of so many skill arenas. A great SEO company will have a extended range of SEO skills within its team so that it can undertake the numerous issues that they will face in ranking a site on Google and other search engines.

However, training is very distinct. Someone that is great at creating results may not be effective at communicating to others how they can get results.

Many SEO trainers are hands on SEO optimizers and they do not have a professional IT training background.

Here are five tips to take note of when selecting a great SEO training company.

ONE:

Ask the SEO company if their trainers are SEO professional people as well as experienced IT trainers. Do they have the ability, know-how and skill to deal with individuals in a classroom situation so that the trainees can fully gain from their SEO skills?

TWO:

Does the SEO trainer have working hands-on experience of ranking numerous unique types of websites on Google, Yahoo and MSN – can they show you the results! Or is the trainer a book teacher – they learnt from a book all the hypotheses but have not learnt the hard cold facts about SEO in the SEO ‘jungle’. Will they be able to bring to the table the help skills to solve YOUR problems on YOUR website? It’s a simple matter of asking.

THREE:

What commercial backdrop does your SEO trainer have? Have they a comprehensive web development background so that they can cover all the core areas that they need to help you rank and learn about ranking your website. A top flight SEO expert teacher should have 2+ years’ web development skills in both HTML and programming languages combines as a minimum.

FOUR:

Does the training come with any followup support? Like all training – on the day everything is easy – after the course when you get back the story is different! What after training support is offered by the SEO training company in writing so that you know you will be able to integrate your training effectively.

FIVE:

What is the company’s current ranking on Google? Have you checked what their current ranking is for keywords like SEO, SEO training, SEO services etc? If they are not on the 1st page or the top of the second page in the local Google site then maybe they are doing training too early before they have established themselves properly. So go check their rankings right away or just ask them!

Super-Charge WordPress Out-Of-The-Box For Search Engine Optimisation

October 25th, 2009 David Anttony No comments

Wordpress out of the box allows fundamental management of the fundamental SEO meta information. To extend the functionality we add our own super-charged version of the All-In-One-SEO Pack. The SEO pack makes it simple to change the page title and page meta description.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack is a great WordPress plugin that completes the SEO aspects for WordPress. For some reason WordPress still has not got the SEO fixed out of the box.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack allows you you to change the most significant page components – page title and page description. It also permits you to change the page keywords, but as we all know, search engines no longer take note of these because they have been spammed too much in the past. Google ended using the keywords for page ranking in the early 2000’s.

Page Titles

This is the No1 SEO element to control. Always make sure that you control the page title. The page title appears in the browser window at the very top of the screen. Search engines use this in the listings and show it in their search results.

Always try to make the page title only carry the keywords you want the page to rank for. Try to limit them to 2 or 3 maximum.

Just like with a book the page title of an HTML page is the most important factor. Never leave this element to chance. Make sure you use keywords in the title.

If your page needs to stretch to cover two or three keywords we have learned that you can still get good rankings from adding multiple keywords to the title. But do remember that the closer the page title is to the keyword you want to rank for the better.

If you are a larger branded company you will probably want to add your company or brand name into the page title considering this is displayed on Google. Keep it short and simple though. Do not add your brand statement just your brand or company name.

Page Description Meta Tags

This element is NOT used by search engines for ranking purposes. However, most search engines will utilize this in their search results so it is important. Google does not use the description all the time but we find that it uses it about 80-90% of the time. The rest of the time it will pick up the first piece of text on the page.

By having a good description it will increase your click through rates because the text will be more engaging to people. Ensure that you use a maximum of 156 characters. If you use any more characters Google will cut short the rest. If you can keep your descriptions to 140 characters or less this is even better seeing Google sometimes adds a date to the start of the description which is part of the 156 characters it displays.

3 Seo Tips That Will Tip Your Ranking Balance

October 9th, 2009 David Anttony No comments

Sometimes it’s just the smallest of things that can make a Tremendous difference with SEO ranking results.

Here are three little things that will make a Larger difference if you utilize them all the time.

1. If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.

2. Title is everything.

3. Being bold makes you stand out.

If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.

If we were going fishing as a professional, we would do one thing before we throw our nets into the water, we would KNOW that there are fish there to be caught! A professional fisher person does not throw their nets into the water BEFORE doing a radar scan to check for fish. If you are smart at SEO you will do the same! You will also not go fishing where everyone else is fishing, this is common sense.

When it comes to a more abstract world like SEO occasionally we forget common sense. So let’s remember!

In the SEO world making sure there are fish is making sure that there is traffic for a word we are opting to rank for. Use tools like Google Traffic Estimator (just Google it) if you are short on funds, and if you have a little bit of money, go get yourself a WordTracker subscription (they also have a free tool as well which is good). These (and many other traffic tools) will tell you that there are ‘fish’ for the keywords that you want to rank for.

The next part of this BIG trick is not to fish were everyone else is fishing. So if you are smart if you are doing a blog for example, you will look for keywords that have good traffic but a LOW number of competing websites. WordTracker will help you with this.

Title is everything.

In the SEO world the page title is the ’secret weapon’ of the top ranker! Here is one thing to remember, make sure that the page title is as close as possible to being 100% the keyword you want to rank for as possible. The page title is like the title of a book. If you wanted to learn about the sex life of a worm then a book title of ‘Sex life of a worm’ will grab your attention and you will know you have the book you want. On the other hand a title of ‘Worms and interesting facts’ will not grab you in the same way. Make your title tags (where ever you can) 100% the keyword/key phrase you want to rank for.

Being bold makes you stand out.

This is a very good onsite optimisation tip if you want to optimise a page/blog entry for a specific keyword, make sure you embolden the keyword in the text 2 or 3 times. Don’t over do it of course.
